Two Militants Arrested in Manipur on Extortion Charges

Imphal, Oct 8 (PTI) Security forces have successfully apprehended two militants associated with different banned organizations for their suspected roles in extortion activities within Manipur's Imphal West and East districts, as reported by police on Wednesday. In a significant operation, a 37-year-old operative of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army was captured from his residence at Kwakeithel in Imphal West on Tuesday, following accusations of extorting money from the public. Meanwhile, a 25-year-old member of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) was arrested on Monday from Kongpal Khaidem Leikai in Imphal East district, also in connection with extortion-related allegations. Ongoing security operations have been intensified across Manipur after the eruption of ethnic clashes two years ago. Tragically, since May 2023, over 260 individuals have lost their lives, and thousands have been left homeless due to ethnic conflicts between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Following the unrest, the central government imposed President's Rule in Manipur, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Consequently, the state assembly, which has its tenure until 2027, has been placed under suspended animation.
