Marina Abramović Explores Eastern Spirituality in Art at Kochi Biennale

Kochi: Renowned Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović sheds light on the deep connection between Eastern cultural traditions and the elements of spirituality and mindfulness during her lecture at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. The lecture, titled “The Past, Present, and Future of Performance Art,” was held on February 10.

According to a press release from the biennale's organisers, Abramović, known for pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, shared insights into the philosophy, discipline, and emotional intensity that define performance art.

Drawing from her vast experience, Abramović highlighted the contrasts between Eastern and Western artistic practices. She pointed out how Eastern traditions often prioritize spiritual connection and mindfulness, aspects she has woven into her art through techniques like meditation and retreats.

Abramović elaborated on the demands of performance art, which require a comprehensive understanding of body and mind. Within this art form, the artist becomes both the creator and the medium. She recounted her shift from painting to performance art, driven by the profound connection she discovered during her first live performance.

She defined performance art as a time-bound interaction that occurs between the artist and the audience. This exchange of energy is core to the art form, creating unique, ephemeral experiences within predetermined spaces and durations.

Addressing the essence of artistic identity, Abramović asserted that true artistry is an innate gift, not solely the result of formal training. While education can refine talent, she emphasized that genuine artistic ability must be inherent. She illustrated this by referencing iconic figures such as Mozart, Michelangelo, and Frida Kahlo, underscoring Kahlo’s resilience in creating personal art amidst physical and financial adversity.

Abramović described artistic dedication as all-consuming, akin to breathing. While passion defines a good artist, she suggested that truly great artists often sacrifice comfort and stability to challenge societal perceptions of art.

She also stressed the importance of identifying one's artistic medium early, noting that artists risk losing their identity by frequently shifting between forms of expression. Each artist must find the most effective tool for communicating ideas and emotions.

During her lecture, Abramović paid tribute to Taiwanese-American performance artist Tehching Hsieh, hailing him as a pioneer and an icon in endurance-based performance art. She also acknowledged Australian artist Leigh Bowery, whose performances challenged social norms and redefined identity, fashion, and spectacle.
