Maharashtra rains: heavy downpour leads to house collapses and landslides

Amid heavy rains in Maharashtra, instances of landslides and house collapses were reported across districts. No casualties were reported in any of them, according to officials.

In Mumbai's Ghatkopar, a landslide triggered by heavy downpour badly damaged a house on Tuesday. Fire tenders were rushed to the site, officials stated.

In Thane, some heavy boulders fell from a hillock but no one was injured. Thane city received 146 mm rainfall in a span of 24 hours ending on 8:30 AM on Tuesday, according to regional data. Low-lying areas in Thane's Kalyan and Bhiwandi also reported flooding leading to evacuation of several people to safer places.

On Monday, a 16-feet wall in Mumbra town of Thane collapsed following continous heavy rains. Residents of the adjoining chawl were temporarily shifted to a Thane civic school, as per reports.

District adminstration of Palghar reported a mud house collapse in Wada taluka on Monday following heavy rains. Occupants of the house were removed once cracks were observed in the house and within minutes, the house came crashing down.

The house was constructed last year under a government scheme for the poor, according to the district officials.

The IMD on Tuesday issued a heavy rainfall alert for Maharashtra over the next four days, following which Chief Minister Eknath Shinde directed the state administration officials to take precautions and ensure there is no loss of life or property.

The Kundalika river in Raigad district, located near Mumbai, has crossed the danger mark, as per an official statement.

Mumbai and some of its neighbouring districts witnessed heavy rains and flooding on Tuesday morning. The IMD has issued an 'orange alert' for south Konkan region and Goa and a 'yellow alert' for north Konkan, north central and south central Maharashtra and Marathwada regions.

People, especially in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Kolhapur, where the rainfall intensity is more, should be alerted about floods in advance, read a Maharashtra government statement.
