Congress leader Shashi Tharoor issued a clarification after his condolences for former Pakistan dictator Pervez Musharraf caused a political controversy.
After calling Musharraf an "implacable foe of India" who turned into a "force for peace", Tharoor said that he was raised in an India where kind words are spoken for people when they die.
The Congress MP added that Musharraf was an enemy responsible for the Kargil war, but did work for peace with India between 2002 and 2007. He said that Musharraf was not India's friend, and his peace initiative was driven by strategic benefit.

Bhagwat that lack of dignity for labour is one of the chief reasons behind unemployment in society.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat commented on the economic and employment situation in India.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai on 5 February 2023, Bhagwat advised people to stop running after jobs, according to news agency PTI. He added that lack of dignity for labour is one of the chief reasons behind unemployment in society.
The RSS chief said that when every work is being done for society, then jobs cannot be considered small or big or different from each other. He reportedly said that everyone is equal in the eyes of god and no caste or sect exists before him. All these things were created by priests, which is wrong, Bhagwat said.
Giving an example, he said a man engaged in washing cups and utensils set up a paan stall with a small corpus of funds. "The paan shop owner went on to generate a wealth of around Rs 28 lakh...But despite that (such examples), our youth keep applying (for jobs) without getting any reply (from the employer)," Bhagwat said.

There are many farmers in the country who struggle to get married despite earning very good income through agriculture, he said.
The situation in the world is favourable for the country to become 'vishwaguru' (world&rsquo;s mentor). There is no shortage of skill sets in the country, he said, adding, "But we are not going to be like other countries after gaining prominence in the world." "Before the Islamic invasion in the country, other invaders did not disturb our lifestyle, our traditions and our schools of thought. But they (Muslim invaders) had a logical argument - first they defeated us using their might and then suppressed us psychologically," he said.
"Due to selfishness, we paved the way for invaders to attack us. Selfishness prevailed in our society and we stopped giving importance to other people and their work," Bhagwat said.

Amid protests in Sikkim over the Supreme Court's observations regarding the Sikkimese Nepali community, the Narendra Modi government has said that it will file a review petition in the apex court.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on 5 February 2023 said that the central government stands with the people of Sikkim, and so, will file a petition in support of the one submitted by the state government.
Rijiju clarified that the Supreme Court judgment does not dilute Article 371F of the Constitution concerning Sikkim, and "has nothing to do with anyone's citizenship". "We value the Constitutional status of every genuine Indian and (it) will be protected at any cost," he said.
Protests broke out in the state after the top court reportedly referred to Sikkimese Nepalis as "immigrants". The Supreme Court reportedly mentioned the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants in an observation on January 13 while extending income tax exemption to all old settlers of the state.

Another attempt to held mayoral elections in Delhi will be held on 6 February 2023, after clashes between the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP led to postponement twice.
On 6 January, when the newly-elected councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi met to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, clashes broke out over non-elected councillors being administered the oath first.
On 24 January, the nominated members were sworn-in first, and then elected councillors. However, the House was adjourned till the next date by presiding officer and BJP councillor Satya Sharma.
In the 4 December 2022 election, the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 wards, relegating the ruling BJP to second place with 104. AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi against BJP's Rekha Gupta for the post of mayor. The candidates for the post of deputy mayor are - Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of AAP and Kamal Bagri of BJP.
The post of mayor in Delhi sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category.

Two labourers of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were killed while another is missing after an avalanche hit them near Chika in the Lahaul subdivision of Lahaul-Spiti district on Sunday evening.
The bodies of Ram Budha from Nepal and Rakesh from Chamba have been recovered while 27-year-old Passang Chhering Lama, a resident of Nepal, remains missing and feared buried in snow, according to the state emergency operation centre.
The search operation for Lama that was continued for hours was called off at night due to low temperature and visibility.
"Two people were dead and one was missing in an avalanche that occurred near Chika in Lahaul and Spiti district at around 3 pm yesterday. Rescue efforts were called off due to low temperature and visibility, it will resume tomorrow," the State Emergency Operation Centre said.

The Delhi High Court will on Monday hear a bail plea by JNU student and activist Sharjeel Imam in a UAPA case related to the alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 riots here.
Imam, who was arrested in February 2020, was on Saturday discharged along with 10 others in the 2019 Jamia Nagar violence case, with the court saying they were made "scapegoats" by police.
The plea, which was filed in April 2022 against a trial court order refusing to grant bail to Imam in the matter, is listed before a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar.
On October 18 last year, the high court refused to grant bail to co-accused Umar Khalid in the same case, saying he was in constant touch with other co-accused and allegations against him were prima facie true.
It had also observed that Sharjeel Imam &ldquo;arguably was at the head of the conspiracy&rdquo; and there existed a string of commonality running amongst all the co-accused.

Amid Adani row, FM says regulators should be on their toes to keep market stable

She said banks and insurance companies are "not overexposed" to any one company and assured that Indian markets are very well managed by its regulators.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that regulators Sebi and RBI should always be on their toes to keep the equity market stable and indicated that the Adani stock rout following a Hindenburg report was a company specific issue.
She said banks and insurance companies are "not overexposed" to any one company and assured that Indian markets are very well managed by its regulators.
"I don't want to have any view on it except that the regulators should act, act in time, and act to keep the market stable, act to keep India's regulatory functions at its best, whether it is the Reserve Bank, or SEBI. Sitting in the Finance Ministry, my view would be that the regulators should be always on their toes. And that is where I would comment on what's got to be done," Sitharaman said.
The Minister was replying to a question in an interview to Times Now on whether the Adani group stock rout was just a market activity, or this has happened for just one stock.
The Adani group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

Addressing Bharat Rashtra Samithi's (BRS) first public meeting outside Telangana at Nanded, he said political parties and leaders are winning in polls but people are losing.
"That's why BRS slogan is 'Abki ki baar, kisan sarkar' (This time around, a government for the farmers). If we unite, it is not impossible. In our country, farmers constitute more than 42 per cent and if the number of farm labourers is also added to that it will be more than 50 per cent which is sufficient to form government&rdquo;, Rao said.
"Today, time has come. 75 years is a long period. Farmers should also be able to write and make rules," he said.

"Why there is scarcity of water in Maharashtra? Who is responsible for it? Think over it. Congress ruled the country for 54 years and BJP ruled for 16 years. These two parties are &lsquo;kasooravaar&rsquo; (guilty). I want farmers' suicides to stop. If a farmers' government is formed then water problem will be solved,&rdquo; Rao, popularly known as KCR, said.
Leaders belonging to various political parties joined BRS and KCR welcomed them by offering pink scarves.&nbsp;

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had on Saturday asserted that the drive against child marriage will continue till the next assembly elections in 2026.

The Assam Police continued with its crackdown on child marriage in the state for the third day in a row, with the number of arrests touching 2,278 on Sunday.
A police statement said the arrests were made based on 4,074 FIRs across the state.
At least 139 people have been apprehended in Biswanath, followed by 130 in Barpeta and 126 in Dhubri, the statement said.
Other districts where over 100 arrests have been made are Baksa (123) and Bongaigaon and Hojai (117 each), it maintained.
Dhubri registered the highest number of FIRs against child marriages at 374 cases, followed by Hojai at 255 and Morigaon at 224.

"Municipal House in Delhi adjourned till next date," Presiding Officer Satya Sharma said. The MCD House convened at around 11:30 AM, after a 30-minute delay. Sharma announced that elections to the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, and Standing Committee members will be held simultaneously.
"Aldermen will be allowed to vote in the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and Standing Committee members," she said.
The announcement drew protests from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors. Party leader Mukesh Goel said aldermen can't vote. Members of AAP remained seated despite adjournment of the House while members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) left the building.

The AAP had earlier objected to Lt Governor V K Saxena nominating 10 aldermen to the MCD house without consulting the city government.
This was the third infructuous session of the MCD after the December 4 municipal polls.
The first two sessions - held on January 6 and January 24 - were adjourned by the presiding officer without electing a mayor following disruptions and acrimonious exchanges between the members of the BJP and the AAP.
