UP: dengue patient transfused with fruit juice instead of platelets, died later, claim relatives

In an unbelievable case of medical negligence, a dengue patient was allegedly transfused with fruit juice instead of blood platelets at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh. The patient later died.

The incident occurred in UP's Prayagraj. Authorities swung into action when a purported video of the incident went viral on social media. The private hospital was sealed on 20 October 2022.

UP's Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak reportedly said that the transfusion packs have been sent for testing, and if found guilty, strict action would be taken against hospital officials.

The owner of the hospital in question denied any wrongdoing. He said that the patient's relatives had been asked to arrange blood platelets as his platelet count had dropped.

The hospital owner said that the relatives brought five units of platelets from SRN Hospital, but the patient had a reaction after transfusion of three units, and so the treatment was stopped. He claimed that the platelet packs had stickers of SRN Hospital on them.
