Authorities had declined to renew Mehbooba's passport since 2019 citing "adverse" police report, after which she moved the Delhi High Court. The high court, in an order in March this year, stated that the passport authority should decide within three months on issuing a fresh travel document to her.
The former chief minister got her new passport just days ahead of a hearing scheduled in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court this week on her daughter's plea for a regular travel document for herself.
In her plea in the Jammu and Kashmir HC, Mehbooba's daughter Iltija challenged the decision of the passport office to give her a country-specific passport with a limited validity of two years to facilitate her higher education. Iltija had refused to accept the conditional travel document and approached the high court with a plea for a regular passport for all countries and with a validity of 10 years.
The new passport given to Mehbooba, the last chief minister of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state before it was bifurcated in 2019, is valid from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2033.
After several rounds back-and-forth pleas in the Delhi High Court, Justice Pratibha M Singh had ordered in March this year that the passport authority should decide within three months on issuing a fresh travel document to Mehbooba.
"Considering that the matter is remanded back to the passport officer and the initial rejection was two years ago, let the passport officer concerned take a decision expeditiously and in any case within three months," the judge had noted in the order.
The court's order had come on a petition by Mehbooba seeking a direction to the passport authorities to take an early decision on her appeal regarding the issuance of a new passport.
In her plea to the Delhi High Court, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said there was a considerable delay in issuing a new passport to her despite reminders and that no decision was being taken on her appeal.
In February this year, Mehbooba had sought the intervention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for the issuance of the passport, saying she had been waiting for it for the past three years to take her 80-year-old mother on a pilgrimage to Mecca.
In March 2021, Mehbooba and her mother Gulshan Ara were denied passports after the Jammu and Kashmir Police had cited an "adverse report". Her mother had been issued a passport two months back.
National Conference president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah congratulated Mehbooba and hoped that now she would be able to fulfil her religious duties as desired by her.&nbsp;

The Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident that has so far claimed 275 lives.
&ldquo;We have recommended a CBI probe into the triple train accident that claimed 275 lives and left over 1,000 injured,&rdquo; Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters in Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening.
The Centre along with the support of the state government are giving all support to the injured patients who are admitted to various hospitals in Balasore, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
&ldquo;Patients are being given all facilities in hospitals. There are teams of doctors who are taking care of patients round-the-clock,&rdquo; Vaishnaw said.
He said the government was trying to get in touch with the families of the deceased.
&ldquo;We are trying to get in touch with families of the dead,&rdquo; the Minister added.
The Odisha government on Sunday revised the triple train accident&rsquo;s death toll to 275 from 288, and put the number of injuries at 1,175.
Chief Secretary P K Jena said some bodies were counted twice. "After detailed verification and a report by Balasore District Collector, the final toll has been fixed at 275," he said.
Three trains&mdash; Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah super fast and a goods train &mdash; were involved in the pile-up on Friday, now being described as one of India&rsquo;s worst train accidents.
The Coromandel Express rammed into a stationary goods train and many of its carriages overturned including some onto another train - the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express which was also passing by at the same time on Friday.

Soon, television screens will flash warning messages about the impending extreme weather events in the country and songs on radio will be cut short to make way for the urgent alerts.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recently started sending text messages on mobile phones to disseminate critical information about heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and heat wave, among others.
It now plans to expand the warning system to television, radio and other mediums to ensure citizens are promptly informed and better prepared for severe weather, according to officials.
"The text-based system is part of phase one of the project. TV, radio and other mediums are being covered in phase two which will be implemented by the end of the year," a senior NDMA official told PTI.
With the amalgamation of technology and communication, the NDMA aims to surpass the limitations of text-based warnings, he said. &nbsp;Before text messages, the NDMA used to issue such early warnings through the 'National Disaster Alert Portal' and a mobile application called "Sachet".
The agency had conceived the "Common Alerting Protocol Based Integrated Alert System" to bring together the alert generating agencies, including the India Meteorological Department, Central Water Commission, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and Forest Survey of India, alert disseminating agencies and state disaster management authorities on a common platform.
The Centre sanctioned the pan-India implementation of the first phase of the project in 2021 following a successful pilot project in Tamil Nadu.
"This is the largest early warning programme in the world called 'common alerting protocol'. People don't need to subscribe to WhatsApp, email or SMS groups. You will get the alert automatically," another NDMA official said.
The messages will be broadcast in two languages, including the local language, alerting people about the impending severe weather event. Going ahead, mobile phones will vibrate upon receiving such alerts, he said.
"If you're watching television, the TV screen will flash the warning message and there will be audio too. If you're listening to a song on the radio, it will be cut short and the alert will be aired. This will be done very shortly," the official said.
He said India will be the only country outside the global north to have a common alerting protocol.
According to IMD, India lost 2,770 people to extreme weather events in 2022. Of them, 1,580 died reportedly due to lightning and thunderstorms, while 1,050 died due to floods and heavy rains. The remaining deaths were due to heat waves, hailstorms and dust storms.
Natural disasters, heavy floods and cyclones, triggered around 2.5 million internal displacements in India in 2022, according to a report by the Geneva-based Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.
Extreme weather, climate and water-related events caused 573 disasters in India between 1970 and 2021 that claimed 1,38,377 lives, according to data from the World Meteorological Department.&nbsp;

An interlocking system is a safety mechanism that ensures the safe and efficient movements of trains at railway junctions, stations and signalling points.
The interlocking system makes sure that movable sections of track that allow trains to change direction from one track to another are properly aligned and locked in the correct position before a train can pass over them. &nbsp; There are circuits installed on the track that detect the presence of a train. The circuits help to determine whether a section of track is occupied or empty, enabling the interlocking system to control train movements.
Electronic interlocking is a modern form of interlocking technology in which the control and supervision of train movements are carried out through software, &nbsp;computers, programmable logic controllers , and communication networks.&nbsp;

The root cause of the three-train crash in Odisha's Balasore district has been identified and the Railways is aiming to restore normal services on the affected tracks by Wednesday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
Talking to reporters at the accident site, he said the issue is of electric point machine, a vital device for railway signalling, and electronic interlocking.
The change that was made to electronic interlocking which led to the accident has been identified, Vaishnaw said while denying that the incident had anything to do with the anti-collision system "Kavach".
The crash involving Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, which were carrying around 2,500 passengers, and a goods train occurred around 7 pm on Friday near the Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore. At least 288 people were dead and over 1,100 injured in the accident.
"The enquiry into the accident has been completed and as soon as the commissioner of railway safety (CRS) provides his report all the details will be known.
"The root cause of the horrifying incident has been identified... I do not want to go into details. Let the report come out. I will just say that the root cause and the people responsible have been identified," the railway minister said.
He also said the kin of around 300 accident victims have been provided compensation. "We met the patients and doctors at Soro Hospital. Special trains are being run from Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ranchi, Kolkata and other places so that patients can reach homes after treatment." Vaishnaw said restoration work was being carried out on a war footing and tracks have already been laid on one of the main lines.
"We have mobilised all resources. I also want to say that Kavach has nothing to do with the accident. This accident occurred due to changes to the electronic interlocking system. The remarks of (West Bengal chief minister) Mamata Banerjee is not true," Vaishnaw said.
"The setting of the point machine was changed. How and why it was done will be revealed in the probe report," he said.
An electric point machine is a vital device for railway signalling for quick operation and locking of point switches and plays an important role in the safe running of trains. Failure of these machines severely affects train movement and deficiencies at the time of installation can result in unsafe conditions.
The preliminary probe report, a copy of which is with PTI, said the signal was given and taken off for the up main line for train number 12841 (Coromandel Express). The train entered the loop line, dashed with the goods train and derailed. In the meantime, train number 12864 (Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express) passed through the down main line and two of its coaches derailed and capsized, the report said.
Vaishnaw, who is on ground zero since Friday night, supervising rescue and relief operations as well as the railway track restoration efforts, said the railway aims to complete restoration work on tracks by Wednesday.
The rescue and relief at the accident site is complete, he said.
Over 1000 workers are working round-the-clock for early restoration. It has deployed more than seven Poclain Machines, two accident relief trains, and three to four railway and road cranes for the resumption of rail traffic.
The work on repairing tracks and overhead electric lines is in progress.
Earlier in the day, the railway tracks had been cleared of wrecked coaches.
In a statement, the South Eastern Railway (SER) zone said, "All 21 coaches which capsized and derailed have been grounded. Now the site is being cleared of bogie/ wheels sets and other components. Three goods wagons and locomotive grounding work is going on. Track linking and OHE work is going on parallel." The railway is also operating special trains for transporting survivors and relatives of the deceased.&nbsp;

As a strong earthquake shook many parts of north India on 21 March 2023, and people rushed out of buildings, panic gripped an operation theatre in Jammu and Kashmir.
Doctors were performing a Caesarean section procedure at the Sub District Hospital, Bijbehara when the tremors hit. First equipment started shaking, and then a power cut plunged the room into darkness, with only slight illumination from the machines.
In a video shared by the Anantnag health department, the medical staff are heard praying while continuing the procedure. One is heard saying, "Keep the baby safe."
Eventually, the lights come back on, and a medic says, "You are fine."
The health department hailed the medical staff for conducting the C-section smoothly.

Sehwag has offered to provide free education to the children who tragically lost their parents in the incident.
The collision, which occurred on June 2 in Balasore, Odisha, involved two express passenger trains and a stationary freight train, resulting in a staggering death toll of at least 275 people, making it one of the deadliest train accidents in the past two decades.
Sehwag wrote on Twitter, &ldquo;In this hour of grief, the least I can do is to take care of education of children of those who lost their life in this tragic accident. I offer such children free education at Sehwag International School&rsquo;s boarding facility.&rdquo;
He further added, "Also salute all the brave men and women who have been at the forefront of the rescue operations and the medical team and volunteers who have been voluntarily donating blood. We are together in this."

The Bihar govt has said that the collapse of an under-construction bridge over Ganga in Bhagalpur was part of a preventive plan to pull down the structure as it was found to be defective.

Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav said that after a portion of the bridge collapses in April 2022, experts studied the structure and informed the state govt that it had serious defects.&nbsp;
Officials said that though a final report from an IIT-Rourkee team is awaited they decided to pull down the bridge as preventive action.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He alleged that they were facing harassment from various quarters including from the Hindu side and felt humiliated.
"In such a situation, due to limited strength and resources, I cannot fight this battle for 'dharma' anymore and that's why I am leaving this.
"Perhaps the biggest mistake I made in my life was by starting this 'dharmayudh'. This society is only with those who mislead by playing gimmicks in the name of religion," he said.
Visen's lawyer Gaur, who had left the case earlier, in a separate statement said that due to a communication gap with plaintiffs, he was withdrawing from the Gyanvapi case, which he is contesting from 2021, and Krishna Janmabhoomi case, which he took up in 2022.
He said that he did not get any fee after May 2022 for contesting these cases.
