The Supreme Court on February 23 rejected a petition seeking cancellation of offline board exams for classes 10 and 12.

A three-judge bench of the top court said that such petitions cannot become the norm as they "give false hope" to students and "mislead" them.

The petition had sought cancellation of offline board exams conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and other state boards.

The bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar, Dinesh Maheshwari, and CT Ravikumar also rejected a request for alternate mode of assessment. The court said that aggrieved parties can approach concerned authorities if there are any problems once dates and other arrangements are finalised.

The SC reportedly added that the PIL is not maintainable at the current stage, and only if decisions are against any Act or regulations, can petitions be filed.
