Participating in Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan, the prime minister said this festival celebrates the hard work of the farmers and expresses gratitude to the land and the Sun.
"The festival of Pongal reminds us that gratitude should go beyond mere words and become an integral part of our daily lives. When the Earth provides us with so much, it is our responsibility to cherish and protect it," Modi said at the celebrations that had Union Ministers, bureaucrats, and people from a cross-section of society in attendance.

The prime minister said that around the world, the Tamil community and those who cherish Tamil culture celebrate Pongal with great enthusiasm, and he was proud to be among them.
Modi said Tamil culture was one of the oldest living civilisations in the world and embodied centuries of wisdom and tradition that draw lessons from history to guide the way toward the future.
"Inspired by this legacy, today's India draws strength from its cultural roots as it moves forward. On this auspicious occasion of Pongal, we feel the spirit of trust and unity that is propelling India ahead is deeply connected to its culture and holds great respect for its land," the prime minister said.
Modi also said the festival of Pongal stressed the importance of maintaining a harmonious balance between nature, family, and society.
"Maintaining soil health, conserving water, and using resources wisely for future generations are essential. Initiatives like Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar embody this very spirit and encourage us to uphold these values," the prime minister said.

In a letter in Tamil and English, he said that Pongal is also about expressing gratitude to all those who enrich our lives with their hard work.
"Dear fellow citizens, Vanakkam! I extend my heartfelt greetings to you and your family on the joyous occasion of Pongal. This special festival reminds us of the close relationship between human labour and the rhythms of nature," Modi said in his letter.
The prime minister noted that this festival is deeply connected with agriculture, the hardworking farmers, rural life and the dignity of work.
Families come together to prepare traditional dishes and share joy and goodwill, and this strengthens bonds across generations and reinforces the spirit of togetherness, he said.
"We in India take pride in the fact that we are home to the oldest language in the world, Tamil. It is gladdening to see Pongal emerge as a global festival. It is celebrated enthusiastically in Tamil Nadu, in different parts of India and by the Tamil community across the world," he said.

As Maharashtra heads to the elections on Thursday for 29 municipal corporations, the spotlight is on Mumbai, where the BJP-led Mahayuti is locked in a battle with the united Thackeray front for control of the cash-rich BMC.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has predicted that MNS leader Raj Thackeray would emerge as the biggest loser in his alliance with cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray.
He also dismissed the coming together of both NCP factions in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as merely a localised development.
Fadnavis rued that Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar broke the rule that the alliance partners will not speak against each other.
CM Fadnavis led the ruling alliance&rsquo;s canvassing, traversing the state to campaign for candidates of the Mahayuti, which includes the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
NCP, the third partner in the Mahayuti, was strategically excluded to attract "non-Hindu" voters, observers said.
This will be the Shiv Sena&rsquo;s first Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election since the 2022 split, when Eknath Shinde broke away with a majority of the party&rsquo;s legislators, along with its name and symbol.
The undivided Shiv Sena had held sway over the country&rsquo;s richest civic body for 25 years.
Polling for the 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards will begin at 7.30 am and conclude at 5.30 pm on January 15.
A total of 3.48 crore voters are eligible to decide the fate of 15,931 candidates, including 1,700 in Mumbai and 1,166 in Pune.
Counting of votes will take place on January 16.
More than 25,000 police personnel, including senior officers, will be deployed across Mumbai to oversee elections to the BMC and vote counting.
Except for Mumbai, the other 28 urban bodies have multi-member wards.
In a political turn ahead of the elections, estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray reunited after two decades in their bid to consolidate Marathi votes, even as rival NCP factions forged a local alliance in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
In this election, the Opposition Congress has asserted its presence in Mumbai by stepping out of the shadow of its Maha Vikas Aghadi allies - Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP).
The Congress has joined hands with Prakash Ambedkar&rsquo;s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and the Rashtriya Samaj Paksh in the state capital, even as it contests independently in Nagpur.
Elections to 29 municipal corporations are being held after a gap of over six years, with their terms having ended between 2020 and 2023.
Of these, nine fall within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the most urbanised belt in India.
The battlegrounds include Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Mumbai, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayandar, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji.
Chief Minister Fadnavis, along with his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, campaigned extensively across Maharashtra, while cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray concentrated their efforts on Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where Uddhav held a rally.
Telangana minister Mohammad Azharuddin, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai were also among the star campaigners for the polls.
Populist promises for women were the highlight of the manifestos of both the Mahayuti and the Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS.
The Mahayuti has promised a 50 per cent concession for women in BEST bus travel, while the Thackeray cousins have assured a Rs 1,500 monthly allowance for women domestic helps and a property tax waiver on houses up to 700 sq ft.
The Congress manifesto, by contrast, prioritises combating Mumbai&rsquo;s pollution, upgrading the BEST fleet, and strengthening the city&rsquo;s financial health.
The race for Mumbai&rsquo;s mayoral post took centre stage in the campaign, with the BJP claiming that a Sena (UBT) victory could lead to a Muslim mayor, a charge the Uddhav Thackeray-led party countered by assuring voters of a Marathi mayor.
CM Fadnavis also guaranteed that the mayor will be a "Hindu and Marathi".
In the 227-ward Mumbai, the BJP is contesting 137 seats, the Shiv Sena 90, while the NCP is fighting separately on 94 seats.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has fielded 163 candidates, the MNS 52, the Congress 143 and the VBA 46.
The Congress has fielded 1,263 candidates across the rest of the state.
After the end of the campaigning on Tuesday, Fadnavis said Raj Thackeray will be the biggest loser in the alliance with his cousin, Uddhav Thackeray.
Downplaying the coming together of the rival NCPs in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad as a "localised phenomenon", he said the BJP will react only if both factions decide to ally after the polls, which he felt was unlikely at the moment.
Fadnavis also remarked that the Thackerays lacked wholehearted commitment in their campaign and appeared "unwilling to stake their political prestige".
While asserting that the BJP remains the central force around which Maharashtra&rsquo;s politics will revolve in the future, he acknowledged that electoral setbacks do not spell the end for any party or leader. Those who strive to make a comeback can still find success, he added.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, down from the minus 4.9 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night, weather department officials said. Shopian in south Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley, where the mercury settled at minus 7.5 degrees Celsius.
Parts of several water bodies, including the interiors of the Dal Lake, froze due to severe cold. Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in south Kashmir, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra, recorded a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district settled at a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, and in central Kashmir's Sonamarg it was minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, settled at minus 5.3 degrees Celsius. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department has said a western disturbance is approaching Kashmir and is likely to affect the Valley's weather from January 16.

Lakhs of pilgrims took a holy dip on Wednesday morning at the confluence of the Hooghly river and the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal's Sagar Island on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
The pilgrims braved the winter chill to take a dip at sunrise and offered prayers at the Kapil Muni Ashram on the island in the South 24 Parganas district, where the revered Gangasagar Mela is underway.
The auspicious timing for the 'shahi snan' is scheduled to begin at 1.19 pm and will continue for 24 hours.
In view of the huge gathering from different corners of the country, the state government has made elaborate arrangements at Sagar Island, located around 100 km from Kolkata.
A senior official said that more people are expected to take a dip at the confluence of the sea and the Hooghly river, a distributary of the Ganga, as the auspicious timing for the 'shahi snan' is yet to begin.
Besides, security has also been beefed up across the districts, and at the railway stations and bus stands in Kolkata in view of the annual fair, he said.
For the first time, advanced water drones, also known as 'rescue drones', have been deployed for continuous surveillance along the shore, he said.
"These drones have been stationed specifically to enhance monitoring around Kapil Muni's Ashram and the main bathing ghats. These rescue drones are capable of carrying a load of up to 100 kg and quickly evacuating pilgrims in distress," he added.&nbsp;

The Ridge recorded a low of 4.6 degrees Celsius, 3.5 notches below normal, and Ayanagar recorded a low of 4 degrees Celsius, 3.1 notches below normal.&nbsp;
According to the IMD, cold wave conditions are declared when minimum temperatures fall 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal. The maximum temperature for the day is expected to settle around 20 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;
Delhi's air quality deteriorated to the 'very poor' category with the Air Quality Index (AQI) settling at 354, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data.&nbsp;
The CPCB's SAMEER app showed that 33 monitoring stations recorded air quality in the 'very poor' category, four in 'severe' and two in 'poor'. Jahangirpuri recorded the worst air quality with an AQI of 420, falling in the 'severe' category.&nbsp;
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'.&nbsp;

The Jaishankar-Rubio phone call came a day after newly-appointed US ambassador Sergio Gor said there will be some contact between the two sides on the trade issue.
The external affairs minister said he had a "good conversation" with Rubio and that they agreed to remain in touch.
"Just concluded a good conversation with @SecRubio. Discussed trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defence and energy," he said on social media. "Agreed to remain in touch on these and other issues," he added.

The India-US ties witnessed a major downturn after President Donald Trump slapped a whopping 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods, including a 25 per cent punitive levy over Russian oil purchases.
Both sides have held multiple rounds of negotiations last year to firm up a bilateral trade deal. However, it could not be sealed yet largely in view of Washington's demands to open up India's farm and dairy sectors.
In an address at the US embassy on Monday, Gor said India and the US are actively engaged on the proposed trade deal. "Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow," he said.
In his remarks, Gor also said that no country is as essential as India to the United States. "No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, it is my goal as ambassador to pursue a very ambitious agenda. We will do this as true strategic partners, each bringing strength, respect and leadership to the table," he said.
The phone conversation between Jaishankar and Rubio also came on a day Trump announced that a 25 per cent tariff will be levied on countries doing business with Iran. Sources in the Indian government said the new tariff is expected to have "minimal impact" on India as volume of trade between India and Iran is currently less than USD 2 billion.
For India, Iran does not even figure in the top 50 global trading partners, the sources said. Last year, India's trade with Iran was USD 1.6 billion, which is approximately 0.15 per cent of India's total trade, they said.

As Delhi battles severe air pollution every year, environmental experts have said that while emergency measures like the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) provide temporary relief, they have failed to address the root causes.
&ldquo;GRAP is a well-designed policy by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and functions as an emergency response to some extent, but it has failed to bring about a significant reduction in pollution levels in Delhi,&rdquo; environmentalist Sunil Dahiya told PTI.
Dahiya, who has over 14 years of experience as a strategist and research analyst on environmental issues, claimed that GRAP is based on an &ldquo;outdated emission inventory,&rdquo; and there is no mechanism to track whether the implemented measures have reduced the overall emission load across the NCR.
GRAP is divided into four stages, each prescribing a set of pollution-control measures aimed at preventing further deterioration of air quality. &ldquo;Although tools such as the Decision Support System (DSS) and the Real-Time Advanced Air Source Management Network (R-AASMAN) exist, they are not linked in a way that allows assessment of GRAP&rsquo;s success in reducing absolute emission loads in Delhi-NCR,&rdquo; Dahiya said.
The DSS, developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, provides modelling-based inputs to policymakers for managing Delhi's air pollution, while R-AASMAN, developed in collaboration with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and IITM, is used for real-time source identification.
Noting that Delhi rarely records &lsquo;good&rsquo; air quality days during the remaining months of the year, Director of the Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group, Bharati Chaturvedi, urged for concrete solutions such as decongestion, improved public transport, an end to biomass and waste burning, and stronger monitoring systems.
&ldquo;GRAP should be phased out gradually, as it is akin to applying an ointment to a fracture. It was introduced as a measure to provide temporary relief to citizens while authorities worked simultaneously on long-term solutions. If we do not look beyond GRAP, the city will continue to face the same situation year after year,&rdquo; Chaturvedi told PTI. She also stressed the need to strengthen pollution control authorities and create clearer growth avenues for scientists.
In November 2025, the CAQM tightened GRAP norms, advancing several pollution-control measures to earlier stages. The revised schedule shifted multiple actions from higher alert stages to lower ones, meaning restrictions are now triggered sooner as the Air Quality Index (AQI) worsens.
Under the new framework, several curbs that previously fell under Stage II ('Poor' AQI 201-300) are now enforced at Stage I. These include uninterrupted power supply to discourage the use of diesel generator sets, deploying additional personnel to streamline traffic at congestion-prone points, issuing pollution alerts through media, and augmenting CNG and electric public transport fleets with higher service frequency and differential fares to promote off-peak travel.
Measures earlier listed under Stage III ('very poor' AQI 301-400) have been moved to Stage II, such as staggering working hours for government offices in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar. Similarly, restrictions previously applicable only in Stage IV ('severe+') now apply at Stage III ('severe' AQI 401-450). These include allowing public, municipal and private offices to operate with 50 per cent staff while the remainder work from home.
Harjeet Singh, Strategic Advisor to Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative, emphasised the need for an &ldquo;uncompromising airshed-level governance model&rdquo; that overrides &ldquo;state politics&rdquo;, and a massive investment in public transport. &ldquo;Systemic change demands that we stop managing the pollution and start managing the source. We need to break our reliance on fossil-fuelled private transport and hold industrial polluters accountable year-round,&rdquo; Singh said, comparing reliance on &lsquo;GRAP&rsquo; to &ldquo;trying to douse a forest fire with a garden hose.&rdquo;
Reacting to the statements by the environmental experts, a CAQM official told PTI that they review the GRAP measures periodically, examining areas where they can be revised and made more stringent. &ldquo;We are actively examining areas where they (GRAP) can be revised and made more stringent. At the same time, we are particularly emphasising on better implementation of existing norms,&rdquo; the CAQM official said.
The official added that activities identified under the GRAP framework are assessed from an implementation perspective to ensure effectiveness on the ground, and that work is underway to introduce stricter measures backed by robust enforcement mechanisms.
GRAP was first notified by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2017 for implementation through the Supreme Court-mandated Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority.
Delhi recorded the highest annual average PM10 concentration in the country in 2025 at 197 micrograms per cubic metre, nearly three times higher than the national standard of 60 micrograms per cubic metre, according to an analysis.
Meanwhile, Delhi&rsquo;s air quality slipped to &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category on Wednesday morning, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Five out of 39 monitoring stations recorded &lsquo;severe&rsquo; air quality at 6 am, while 32 stations remained in the &lsquo;very poor&rsquo; category.
According to the CPCB classification, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered &lsquo;good&rsquo;, 51 and 100 &lsquo;satisfactory&rsquo;, 101 and 200 &lsquo;moderate&rsquo;, 201 and 300 &lsquo;poor&rsquo;, 301 and 400 &lsquo;very poor&rsquo;, and 401 and 500 &lsquo;severe&rsquo;.

Indian Army troops opened fire to take down multiple suspected Pakistani drones that entered Indian territory from across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening, army officials said in Jammu.
However, the drones briefly hovered in the Manjakote sector before returning to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), officials said.
The fresh drone sightings came as Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi said that the Indian Army on Tuesday strongly raised with Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) about sightings of Pakistani drones along the border areas in the Jammu Sector in the last three days.
Defence sources said that the Indian Army implemented counter-Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) measures after drones were spotted along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Around 7 pm, troops fired upon a few Pakistani drones when they entered Indian territory over Dunga Gala in the Chingus area of Rajouri. The drones subsequently vanished and are believed to have retreated to the other side, officials said.
Officials noted that army personnel detected the movement of two drone-like objects over the forward Dheri Dhara village around 7.35 pm and fired several live rounds to target them.
However, the suspected drones moved toward Kalali before returning, officials said, adding that a search operation was initiated to ensure no weapons or narcotics were airdropped by the drones.
On Sunday, troops guarding the Nowshera sector fired medium and light machine guns after observing drone activity over Gania-Kalsian village.
On the same day, drone movements were also detected over Khabbar village in Teryath, Kalakote in Rajouri, Tain-Topa in the Mankote area of Poonch district, and Chak Babral village in the Ramgarh sector of Samba. However, those flying objects returned within a few minutes.
Earlier on Friday night, security forces recovered an arms consignment, dropped by a drone from Pakistan, in Paloora village of Ghagwal near the International Border in Samba. The recovery included two pistols, three magazines, 16 rounds and a grenade.

US President Donald Trump's fresh threat of a 25 per cent tariff on any country doing business with Iran is likely to have a "minimal impact" on India, government sources said on Tuesday.
As Iran continued to witness massive anti-government protests, Trump said on Tuesday that the 25 per cent tariff will be slapped on countries having trade with Tehran and it will become "effective immediately". The death toll in the nationwide protests in Iran increased to over 2,000, according to activists.
"Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25 per cent on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive," Trump said on social media.
There was no clarity on implementation of the tariff as no formal notification has been issued by the Trump administration on it yet, people aware of the matter said.
In August, Trump slapped a 50 per cent tariff on India including a 25 per cent additional duties for India's purchase of Russian crude oil. If India comes under the fresh tariff regime, then the duties on Indian goods are expected to increase beyond 50 per cent.
For India, Iran does not even figure in the top 50 global trading partners, the sources cited above said. Last year, India's trade with Iran was USD 1.6 billion, which is approximately 0.15 per cent of India's total trade, they said.
India's trade value with Iran is expected to go down further in the current financial year due to external economic factors, the sources said. India's current trade with Iran is bare minimum and it primarily involves food items and pharmaceuticals.
India stopped importing oil from Iran in May 2019 because of sanctions imposed by Trump in his first term.
Iran's total imports in 2024 were worth almost USD 68 billion, and the country's leading import partners were the UAE (USD 21 billion or 30 per cent of Tehran's imports), China (USD 17 billion or 26 per cent), Turkiye (USD 11 billion or 16 per cent), and the European Union (USD 6 billion or 9 per cent).
India is a development partner in Iran's Chabahar port project. The two sides have a 10-year agreement on the development of a terminal at the port. The Trump administration granted a six-month exemption from US sanctions applicable from October 2024 for the Chabahar port.

72-year-old Vishnu Samant was swimming when a 20-year-old jumped into the pool from a height, police said. Samant suffered injuries on his neck and other parts and was declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
Police filed a case of death by negligence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Pongal celebrations in the national capital on Wednesday, hailing it as a global festival representing one of the oldest civilisations in the world.
Modi's presence at the celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugani in New Delhi, with leading lights of the Tamil society, including the cast of the recently released film Parasakthi, was seen as an outreach to the southern state where assembly elections are due in the next few months.
Addressing the gathering, Modi said this festival celebrates the hard work of the farmers and expresses gratitude to the land and the Sun.
He said Pongal, which sends out the message of maintaining harmonious balance with nature, has emerged as a global festival, cherished by Tamilians world over.
"The festival of Pongal reminds us that gratitude should go beyond mere words and become an integral part of our daily lives. When the Earth provides us with so much, it is our responsibility to cherish and protect it," Modi said at the celebrations that had Union Ministers, bureaucrats, and people from a cross-section of society in attendance.
Those who attended include Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy, and Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu.
The cast of Tamil film Parasakthi, including actors Sivakarthikeyan and Ravi Mohan, and music composer G V Prakash Kumar, joined Prime Minister Modi in celebrating the festival at the event.
Modi said that around the world, the Tamil community and those who cherish Tamil culture celebrate Pongal with great enthusiasm, and he was proud to be among them.
He said Tamil culture was one of the oldest living civilisations in the world and embodied centuries of wisdom and tradition that draw lessons from history to guide the way toward the future.
"Inspired by this legacy, today's India draws strength from its cultural roots as it moves forward. On this auspicious occasion of Pongal, we feel the spirit of trust and unity that is propelling India ahead is deeply connected to its culture and holds great respect for its land," the prime minister said.
Modi also said that Pongal stressed the importance of maintaining a harmonious balance between nature, family, and society.
"Maintaining soil health, conserving water, and using resources wisely for future generations are essential. Initiatives like Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar embody this very spirit and encourage us to uphold these values," the prime minister said.
Earlier, in a letter in Tamil and English, he said that Pongal is also about expressing gratitude to all those who enrich our lives with their hard work.
"Dear fellow citizens, Vanakkam! I extend my heartfelt greetings to you and your family on the joyous occasion of Pongal. This special festival reminds us of the close relationship between human labour and the rhythms of nature," Modi said in his letter.
The prime minister noted that this festival is deeply connected with agriculture, the hardworking farmers, rural life, and the dignity of work.
Families come together to prepare traditional dishes and share joy and goodwill, and this strengthens bonds across generations and reinforces the spirit of togetherness, he said.
"We in India take pride in the fact that we are home to the oldest language in the world, Tamil. It is gladdening to see Pongal emerge as a global festival. It is celebrated enthusiastically in Tamil Nadu, in different parts of India and by the Tamil community across the world," he said.
"Once again, warm Pongal wishes to you. May this festival bring an abundance of prosperity, success and good health to everyone's lives," Modi said.
The prime minister's outreach to the Tamil community is significant ahead of the assembly polls in Tamil Nadu this year.
Later, actor Sivakarthikeyan said it is always an honour and a pleasure to meet the prime minister. "The Pongal celebration in Delhi is a message about the country's unity," he told reporters.
Co-star Ravi Mohan said he was overwhelmed by the aura of Prime Minister Modi. "The prime minister greeted us with a smiling face, and it feels great to be here," he said.
Thanking Murugan for inviting the Parasakthi team to participate in the Pongal celebration in Delhi along with the prime minister, Mohan said it was a great honour for all Tamilians that such a beautiful event was held in the heart of the national capital.
Music composer Kumar, in a post on X, said, "Thiruvasagam was performed today in Pongal-2026 celebration at Delhi in front of our honourable prime minister Narendra Modi&hellip; and (Union Minister) L Murugan."
The film, Parasakthi, is set against the backdrop of protests against the "imposition" of Hindi in Tamil Nadu in the 1960s. The Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress has objected to the depiction of late prime minister Indira Gandhi in the film.

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar denied reports of a special message from Rahul Gandhi, stating the leader only encouraged the state government to continue its work amid media speculation.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday clarified that there is no message from Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi as being reported in the media, and that the latter has only asked the state government to continue the good work.
Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress President, played down speculations regarding his social media post which read "efforts may fail, but prayers won't", linking it with his brief conversation with Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday evening.
Rahul Gandhi's brief conversation with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and his deputy and a claimant for the CM's chair, D K Shivakumar, on Tuesday evening has sparked off speculations, amid the ongoing power tussle between the two.
"I'm the state Congress President, he (Rahul Gandhi) is the leader of opposition (in Lok Sabha), he was also earlier the Congress President. Can our meeting with him, discussions with him, giving respect to him and receiving him as per protocol -- be discussed in public? You (media) unnecessarily quoting someone off the record are creating confusion and are destroying the respect your TV channels have," Shivakumar said in response to a question.
Speaking to reporters here, he insisted, "There is no message, we met him (Rahul Gandhi). He asked us to continue working in a good way, we will work in a good way. We have informed him about programmes we have planned regarding MGNREGA (Save MGNREGA campaign) in the state. We have also discussed BJP's politics in the state."
Asked whether anything was discussed with Rahul Gandhi that cannot be shared on record with the media, the KPCC chief said, "there is no such thing with me, always it is on-record with me."
The short talk between the leaders took place on the tarmac on Tuesday, as Rahul Gandhi landed at the Mandakalli Airport here for transit, on his way back to New Delhi from Gudalur in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, where he attended an event.
The former AICC president had brief conversations with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar both separately and together.
Asked about his social media post stating "efforts may fail, but prayers won't", the Deputy CM said it is not something new, and that he has made this statement in the past too.
"Recently, I had been to Udyami Vokkaliga-FC Expo 2025 (an entrepreneurial extravaganza dedicated to fostering the growth and success of Vokkaliga enterprises), there I had told them this, while sharing my experience, and the same has been tweeted," he clarified.
Shivakumar said that he will be going to New Delhi on January 16.
According to party sources, Shivakumar will be in the national capital to take part in a preparatory meeting in connection with the Assembly elections in Assam, for which he has been appointed as a senior observer by the Congress.

Senior DMK Leader Dayanidhi Maran on Wednesday said that girls in Tamil Nadu were asked to study, whereas their counterparts in the North were asked to stay at home, be in the kitchen, and bear children.
Participating in a function presided by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin here, Maran said the government functioning under the leadership of M.K. Stalin is a 'Dravidian Model' government which functions with the idea of "Everything for everyone" (ellarukum ellam).
In particular, boys and girls in Tamil Nadu are expected to bear the laptop distributed by the government and either face an interview or join post-graduation with confidence, the DMK MP said.
"In Tamil Nadu we tell women to study. But what is told in North India? They say girls should not go to work, should be at home, be in the kitchen, bear children. This is your job. They say like this," Maran said at an event here.
"...This is Tamil Nadu. This is Dravida Nadu. It is the land of (late DMK patriarch) M Karunanidhi, (former Chief Minister) Anna, and (Chief Minister) M K Stalin. In this soil, your (women's) progress is the progress of Tamil Nadu. Why do global companies come to Chennai? Because everyone here is educated not only in Tamil but also in English," he said.

In Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s Sukma district, 29 Naxalites surrendered under the &ldquo;Poona Margem&rdquo; initiative, weakening Maoist strongholds and highlighting the state&rsquo;s successful surrender and rehabilitation policy.

As many as 29 Naxalites surrendered before the police in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Wednesday, a senior official said.
The cadres, all active as members of the frontal wings of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), turned themselves in before senior police and CRPF officials here under the "Poona Margem" (from rehabilitation to social reintegration) initiative, Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan said.
They were impressed by the state government's surrender and rehabilitation policy, he said.
Of them, Podiam Budhra, head of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Majdoor Sangthan (DAKMS &ndash; frontal wing of Maoists) in the Gogunda area, was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh on his head.
The other cadres were members of DAKMS, militia, and Janatana Sarkar wings of the Maoists, the official said.
The establishment of a security camp in the Gogunda area recently played a crucial role in the surrender. Following the setting up of the camp, intensified anti-Naxal operations, sustained pressure and continuous search operations significantly curtailed Maoist activities in the region, he said.
Gogunda area, owing to its difficult and remote terrain, was earlier considered a safe and strategic base for the Maoists' Darbha division. But after the security camp was established, the Maoist stronghold was effectively dismantled, the official said.
With this surrender, the Maoists' support system in the Darbha division has also been weakened, he added.
Chavan appealed to all those associated with the outlawed Maoist organisation to give up violence, assuring them security and a respectable life.
Earlier, 63 Naxalites surrendered in the neighbouring Dantewada district on January 8, while 26 cadres shunned violence and joined the mainstream in Sukma on January 7.
More than 1,500 Naxalites surrendered in the state in 2025.
The Centre has resolved to eliminate Naxalism from the country by March 31 this year.

BJP leader Narayanan Thirupathy on Wednesday criticised DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran over his recent remarks comparing women&rsquo;s empowerment in Tamil Nadu with that in northern states, calling the comments &ldquo;offensive&rdquo; and a sign of &ldquo;lack of common sense.&rdquo;
Speaking to ANI, Thirupathy demanded an apology from Maran, particularly to Hindi-speaking communities. "I don't think Dayanidhi Maran has any common sense. So this is the problem. I strongly condemn Dayanidhi Maran. He has to apologise to the people of India, particularly the Hindi-speaking people, whom he says are uneducated and uncivilised," he said.
The comments came after Maran, addressing an event in Chennai, highlighted welfare initiatives by the Tamil Nadu government, including the distribution of laptops to students.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The laptops our government had distributed are used by the beneficiaries to study and give interviews. This is what we are proud of. This is the reason we in Tamil Nadu ask you to study,&rdquo; Maran said.
He also contrasted Tamil Nadu with northern states, stating, &ldquo;In northern India, women are told not to do jobs and are asked to stay inside the house, work in the kitchen and give birth to children. But Tamil Nadu is a Dravidian state, where importance is given to your upliftment.&rdquo;
Responding to the controversy, DMK leader TKS Elangovan defended Maran&rsquo;s remarks, stating that women&rsquo;s education and empowerment depend on the party in power in each state. &ldquo;It depends on the party which is ruling the state. Now Congress is empowering women. There is no doubt that wherever Congress is ruling, they are doing good for the education of women,&rdquo; he said.
Elangovan added that Tamil Nadu has consistently focused on advancing women&rsquo;s rights. &ldquo;Here in Tamil Nadu, we fought for women and empowered them. We gave them education. We gave them employment. We have also reserved seats in government jobs. We have been working for the advancement of women's rights from the beginning. In the north, there is nobody to fight for the women. That's all,&rdquo; he said.
