A surprise search planned by the Anti-Narcotics squad of the Kottayam police at the house of a man suspected to be a drug dealer resulted in a shock for them due to the presence of several violent dogs trained to bite anyone wearing 'khaki' attire.
The presence of the dogs hindered the search process on Sunday night and also enabled the accused to escape from the police who were focused on avoiding the attacks of the canines.
However, the dogs were subdued and over 17 kilograms of ganja was seized from the site, police said.
Speaking to reporters, Kottayam SP K Karthick IPS said it was close to midnight when the search team, also comprising officers from the nearby Gandhinagar police station, arrived at the location.
"We did not expect there would be so many dogs here and that they would be violent. So, we faced difficulty initially in carrying out a proper search. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured.
"The accused had imparted training to the dogs to bite on seeing khaki. He had been briefly trained in dog handling by a person retired from the BSF, but was kicked out from there for asking questions like how to make dogs bite someone wearing khaki," the SP said.
The top officer of the district police also said the accused under the guise of being a dog trainer was selling drugs and the same was evident from the seizure of over 17 kgs of ganja from the site.
"According to our preliminary investigation, he (accused) was living here on rent and was known to everyone in the area as a dog trainer. Therefore, people used to leave their dogs with him, at the rate of Rs 1,000 per day, when they went outside and he would look after the canines," Karthick said.

The JD(S) chief H D Deve Gowda has appealed to PM Modi to direct the Jal Shakti Ministry to appoint an external agency in the growing Cauvery water issue.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Monday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to direct the Jal Shakti Ministry to appoint an external agency, independent of the states that are party to the dispute and the union government, to conduct studies of all reservoirs in the Cauvery basin.
He also stressed the need to have an appropriate distress formula applicable to all the states concerned, in such distress conditions.
Noting that due to the failure of the Southwest monsoon (from June to September) this year, there is insufficient storage in the identified/designated four reservoirs of the Cauvery basin in Karnataka, he said the state is facing such a grave situation that it is finding it extremely difficult even to cater to the drinking water requirements, let alone for irrigation.
The Janata Dal (S) supremo released a copy of the September 23 letter that he wrote to the Prime Minister on issues of "resolving the ongoing disputes and differences between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in the matter of releasing Cauvery waters from Karnataka reservoirs to Tamil Nadu", at a press conference here.
Deve Gowda said that the combined storage available as on September 23 in all four reservoirs of the Cauvery basin in Karnataka is only 51.10 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) whereas the requirement for standing crops and for drinking water is of 112 TMC.

Pictures showing the bodies of two Meitei students from Manipur who went missing in July have surfaced on social media.
In one of the photos, the two can be seen sitting next to each other, with armed men in the background. In another photo, their bodies were seen lying on the ground.
After the images sparked an outrage, the Manipur government released a statement saying that the case has already been handed over to the CBI, NDTV reported.&nbsp;
The government vowed to take strict and decisive action against the perpetrators.
"The security forces have also started the search operation to nab the perpetrators. In response to this distressing situation, the government assures the public that swift and decisive action will be taken against all those involved in the kidnapping and killing," said the government.

Fresh violence broke out in Manipur on May 28, 2023, with at least 5 people being killed, and more than 10 injured in separate incidents, as per reports.
The 5 casualties included a police officer who was killed in Sugnu in Kakching, where another cop and 6 civilians were injured. In Sugnu, a mob allegedly set on fire the houses of people belonging to the Kuki community, as per a Hindustan Times report.
Meanwhile, one civilian died and another was injured after being shot by suspected Kuki terrorists in Pheyang in Imphal West.
Details of other fatalities were being ascertained, officials reportedly said.

As per the news outlet, the party intends to rely on a "collective leadership" approach to secure victory in these polls.
The information comes a day after the saffron party announced a second list for Madhya Pradesh poll. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has still not featured in any of the lists released by BJP.
Party sources also told NDTV, that speculations around Chouhan's removal are untrue, however added that any leader from the party could potentially become the chief minister.&nbsp;

The ground floor of Ayodhya's Ram Temple will be completed in December this year, authorities said.

The construction of the ground floor of the three-storey Ram temple in Ayodhya will be completed by December-end, and the consecration ceremony is expected to take place on January 22, temple Construction Committee Chairperson Nripendra Mishra has said.
In an interview to PTI, he also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take part in an event related to the 'pran pratishtha' on any day during January 20-24. The final date is yet to be communicated by the Prime Minister's Office, he said.
Mishra also said work is underway to design an apparatus that will be installed on the 'shikhar' of the temple, which will make sun rays fall momentarily on the forehead of the deity in the sanctum sanctorum on the day of Ram Navami every year.
It is being built in Bengaluru and its design is being overseen by scientists, he added.
The Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, and an institute in Pune have jointly created a computerised programme for this, Mishra said.
The Supreme Court in a 2019 verdict had paved the way for the construction of a Ram temple by a trust at the disputed site in Ayodhya, and directed the Centre to allot an alternative five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a new mosque at a "prominent" place in the holy town of Uttar Pradesh.
The court had ruled that the 2.77 acres of the disputed land where the demolished 16th century-era Babri Masjid once stood will remain with a Central government receiver and be handed over to the trust within three months of the ruling for the construction of the temple.
The Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will formally invite Prime Minister Modi for the consecration ceremony during which the idol of Ram Lalla will be installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The temple trust has decided to start the process of the consecration of Ram Lalla after Makar Sankranti on January 14, and observe a 10-day ritual of Ram Lalla's 'pran pratishtha' (consecration).
The Ram temple in Ayodhya is likely to open for devotees on January 24 after the consecration of Ram Lalla idol, Mishra, a member of the trust, had said in June.
In response to a query during the interview, Mishra did not reject the suggestion that the ceremony taking place ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls shall have political implications.
"It was planned to complete the construction of the ground floor of the temple by December 2023 and this work will definitely be completed within the stipulated time," he said.
He said the temple is being constructed with a vision that its structure will last at least 1,000 years The 'pran pratishtha' will be started in consultation with knowledgable saints and sages, Mishra added.
He said a committee under the trust's general secretary Champat Rai has been set up which is working the details of this planned ceremony.
"When the ceremony takes place on January 22 next year, then there is a huge rush expected. The trust has urged people to see it from their homes, villages (via television broadcast)," the chairman of the temple's construction committee said.
The Prime Minister's Office is yet to inform as to on what date he will attend the 'pran pratistha'-related ceremony, Mishra said, adding the trust will announce it when the final programme comes.
But it is expected to be during January 20-24 as after that the PM will be very busy with Republic Day and other programmes, Mishra said.
When asked about the plan for devotees who will come after the consecration ceremony, he said, they will get 15-20 seconds time to for a 'darshan', but they will be satisfied with the overall experience at the temple complex.
On the temple architecture and construction material, Mishra said, iron has not been used in its construction, and copper has been used to link stone blocks.
The built-up area of the temple is 2.5 acres and if one includes the 'parikrama path' the total area of the complex is about eight acres, he said.
Ninety bronze panels will depict the life and duties performed by Lord Ram, he added.
He also said about Rs 900 crore has been spent so far on the temple's construction, and it is estimated that about Rs 1,700 crore to 1,800 crore will be spent on the overall construction of the complex.
Mishra said some artefacts were unearthed during excavations by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and some objects were found during the temple's groundbreaking and construction work.

Some of these items have been placed safely under the custody of the trust, Mishra said. "After taking permission from the ASI, we will display these in a proposed museum." Asked about the invitees for the consecration ceremony, he said, a preliminary list of 10,000 people is being prepared, which will include saints, seers, people associated with Ram temple movement etc, he added.
