In response to Germany saying it expects democratic principles to be applied in the case, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh thanked the German envoy for 'taking note of how the democracy is being compromised in India through the persecution of Rahul Gandhi.'
Singh's tweet drew a taunt from Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju who 'thanked' Rahul Gandhi for 'inviting foreign powers to interfere in India's internal matters.&nbsp;
'Indian Judiciary can't be influenced by foreign interference. India won't tolerate 'foreign influence' anymore because our Prime Minister is Shri Narendra Modi Ji,' the minister added.

"We have taken note of the verdict of the first instance against the Indian opposition politician Rahul Gandhi as well as the suspension of his parliamentary mandate. To our knowledge, Mr Gandhi is in a position to appeal the verdict," Germany's foreign ministry spokesperson said during a press briefing
"It will then become clear whether this verdict will stand and whether the suspension of his mandate has any basis," she added.

This is reportedly the third time when Pakistan's Twitter account has been restricted in India.
Earlier in October 2022, the Twitter account of the Pakistan government was withheld in India. It was withheld earlier in July as well but had been reactivated and was visible. According to Twitter guidelines, the microblogging site takes such action in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order.&nbsp;
In June last year, Twitter in India banned official accounts of Pakistan Embassies in the United Nations, Turkey, Iran and Egypt. In August, India blocked eight YouTube-based news channels, including one operating from Pakistan and one Facebook account for posting "fake, anti-India content" online.

Project Akashteer: Defence Ministry inks Rs 2,400 cr deal with Bharat Electronics

According to the Ministry of Defence, the first contract with BEL pertains to the procurement of the Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System 'Project Akashteer' worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.

In yet another boost to self-reliance in defence sector, the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday signed three contracts -- two with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Ghaziabad and one with New Space India Limited (NSIL) -- at a total cost nearly Rs 5,400 crore, to bolster the defence capabilities of the country.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the first contract with BEL pertains to the procurement of the Automated Air Defence Control and Reporting System 'Project Akashteer' worth Rs 1,982 crore for the Indian Army.
The second contract with BEL relates to the acquisition of Sarang Electronic Support Measure (ESM) systems along with the associated Engineering Support Package from BEL, Hyderabad at an overall cost of Rs 412 crore for the Indian Navy.
The contract with NSIL, a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Department of Space, Bengaluru pertains to the procurement of an advanced Communication Satellite, GSAT 7B, which will provide High Throughput Services to the Indian Army at an overall cost of Rs 2,963 crore, said the Defence Ministry statement.

For the first time in the history of Hajj pilgrimage, 4,314 women have applied to go on the pilgrimage without a 'Mehram' or a male guardian with a blood relation, informed the Minority Affairs Ministry sources.
The Saudi Arabian government, in October, announced that Mehram, a male blood relative with whom marriage is not permissible, is no longer required to accompany a women pilgrim from any part of the world.
The applications will be cleared on priority by the Ministry and Hajj travel pilgrims list will also likely be cleared by Friday, the sources added.
This is the first time that the Ministry of Minority Affairs has received such a large pool of applications from women above the age of 45 years who wish to perform the Hajj pilgrimage without any male guardian, as per ministry sources.

'No foreign diplomat...': what Jaishankar said on Rahul Gandhi disqualification row

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said no foreign diplomat has raised with him the issue of Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha, which was an outcome of a law "supported" by the Congress leader in the past.
Speaking at the Rising India Summit of Network18, S Jaishankar said Rahul Gandhi's disqualification as member of Lok Sabha happened as he refused to express regret about the disparaging remarks he made against a community at a public meeting four years ago.
"The law is the law, unless somebody thinks that the law is not for them," S Jaishankar said.
The minister replied in the negative to a question whether any of his diplomatic counterparts had raised the issue with him.
"Four years ago Rahul Gandhi was disparaging of a community in a public meeting. It is on public record. A member of that community took offense and began legal proceedings," S Jaishankar said, on how he would explain the issue to his counterparts abroad.
The external affairs minister said Mr Gandhi had an opportunity to rectify the situation by expressing regret, but chose not to do so.
"The legal process produced an outcome. The outcome triggered a law, which Rahul Gandhi had himself supported some years ago," he said referring to the verdict of a Gujarat court sentencing the Congress leader to a two-year jail term in a defamation case.
S Jaishankar said the law has been applied to 10-12 elected representatives, including of the ruling party.
As per Section 8(3) of the Representation of the Peoples Act, a person convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years, shall be disqualified.
The disqualification, as per the Act, shall begin on the date of the conviction and continue for a period of six years after his release.
In Rahul Gandhi's case, unless the conviction is stayed by an appellate court, his disqualification will continue for a total of eight years - two years of imprisonment plus six post-release.

A doctor of the Ranchi hospital where Vivek died said that he had consumed pesticide and was admitted to the medical establishment.

Jharkhand&rsquo;s Sindri MLA Indrajeet Mahto&rsquo;s 29-year-old son Vivek Kumar Mahto died on Monday after allegedly consuming pesticide, police said.
The deceased, who was staying in Delhi and preparing for competitive examinations, had returned to Silli, around 65 km from Ranchi, a few days back and was staying with one of his friends, a police officer said.
His father and Sindri&rsquo;s BJP MLA has been ill for a long time and is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Hyderabad.
&ldquo;As per information received, Vivek Kumar Mahto consumed pesticide on Sunday morning. He was first taken to a private hospital in Muri and was later referred to another medical establishment in Ranchi, where he died on Monday,&rdquo; Silli police station in-charge Akashdeep told PTI.
He said Vivek might have been suffering from depression and it seems to be a case of suicide but further investigation is underway.

According to an Indian Express report, Congress party wrote to YouTube earlier in March suggesting that it suspects viewership of Rahul&rsquo;s two videos on Adani were suppressed after the issue was flagged by Congress member Sam Pitroda in a letter to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan on March 11.
