Indian's death in Ukraine: PM Modi speaks to family; Karnataka CM turns emotional | Russia war

The death of an Indian student in Ukraine has sent shockwaves across the nation. 21-year-old Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar died in Russian shelling in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on March 1.

He was reportedly standing in a queue to get food when the deadly attack occurred. Speaking to his father before going out for food, Naveen had reportedly said that the bunker that he was hiding in had run out of food and water.

Hailing from Karnataka's Haveri, Naveen was a student at the Kharkiv National Medical University.

Hours after the government confirmed the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the grieving parents of the young victim. BJP MP from Haveri, Shivkumar Chanabasappa Udasi also visited the family. In Bengaluru, CM Basavaraj Bommai choked up while speaking to reporters, and said that he knows Naveen's family personally.

Following the development, the Indian government called in the envoys of Russia and Ukraine to reiterate the importance that Delhi places on the safe return of Indian nationals from the war-torn country.
