Heavy rains kill 8 in Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges shut in 23 districts

Eight people have died in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu, state Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran said as rain gods continue to show their wrath on southern India.

Incessant rains in the state led to waterlogging and flash floods in several areas due to which schools and colleges have been closed in 23 districts.

Rescue operations are underway with one NDRF team deployed Kanchipuram and two deployed in Chinglepet.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and has warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday.

It has also warned fishermen against going out into the sea and predicted 'wind speeds of 40-5 kms per hour gusting to 60 kms per hour'
