Depression in Bay of Bengal triggers heavy rains, flash floods in Andhra, Tamil Nadu

Parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh experienced heavy rainfall due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal that crossed the coast between the two states on Friday morning.

Schools remained closed in several districts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, while Southern Railway announced suspension of trains.

The heavy downpour caused loss of life and property in both states.

At least three people died and over 30 were feared missing after a flash flood in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday. Several villages were flooded after a breach in a dam led to the overflowing of the Cheyyeru river.

In Tamil Nadu's Vellore, 9 people including 4 children died after the roof of their house collapsed due to the rain. Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each.

NDRF and SDRF teams have swung into action to carry out relief and rescue operations in both states.

According to the state govt, Tamil Nadu has received 61% excess rainfall till date during the ongoing northeast monsoon period starting October 1.
