Dalit student at IIT Bombay faced discrimination, alleges family; premier institute denies charge

The family of the 18-year-old IIT Bombay student who died allegedly by suicide has claimed that he was discriminated against on the basis of caste on the campus.

Some of his friends stopped talking to him when they learnt that Darshan Solanki was a Dalit, NDTV reported quoting Solanki's sister.

The IIT Bombay however has rejected charges of caste bias in the institute.

Solanki, a first year student of BTech (Chemical) died allegedly after jumping off the seventh floor of a hostel building on the Powai campus of the premier institute on 12 February.

The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, a student group, had called Solanki's death an “institutional murder”.

However, the institute on Tuesday said it takes utmost precautions to make the campus as inclusive as possible and it has zero tolerance for any discrimination by faculty.
