Holed up in the cantonment town of Rawalpindi, Pakistan, under the patronage of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Gul, who also goes by the alias of Sajjad Ahmed Sheikh, has been a planner of a number of terror attacks, including targeted killings between 2020 and 2024 in Central and South Kashmir, grenade attacks in Central Kashmir in 2023, the ambush of J&amp;K police personnel in Bijbehra in Anantnag, and the Gagangir Z-Morh Tunnel attack in Ganderbal.
The NIA had designated him a terrorist in April 2022 and kept a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head.
The official said that during the investigation into the deadly April 22 Pahalgam attack, links and some communications have been traced back to Gul. The TRF had claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group, under Gul's instruction, had shot 25 tourists at point-blank range after asking their religion in Pahalgam on April 22. A local tourist guide was also killed by the terrorists.
Used by Pakistan's external snooping agency ISI as a Kashmiri face of the local Punjabi-dominated Lashkar-e-Taiba, Sheikh was educated in Srinagar and did his MBA in Bangalore, later pivoting to a lab technician course in Kerala. He returned to the Valley, where he opened a diagnostic lab and started providing logistical support to the terror group.
During his work as an overground worker (OGW) of the terror group, Gul was caught by the Special Cell of the Delhi police in 2002 at Nizamuddin Railway Station with 5 kilograms of RDX. It was revealed that he was conducting a recce and conspiring to conduct serial blasts in the national capital, for which he was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment on August 7, 2003.
He moved to Pakistan after his release from prison in 2017, where the ISI chose him to lead a proxy of the LeT &mdash; The Resistance Front (TRF)&mdash;in Kashmir in 2019 to give it a facade of an indigenous terror movement of Jammu and Kashmir.
The creation of TRF was a strategy of the ISI in the aftermath of the Pulwama incident in February 2019, when Pakistan had come to the adverse notice of the world for sponsoring and harboring terror outfits like LeT and JeM.
His brother, an ex-doctor in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital, Srinagar, was also a terrorist in the 1990s who had migrated to Saudi Arabia and later to Pakistan, where he is now involved in terror funding with fugitives in Gulf countries.

Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and a few foreign airlines cancelled their services to and from various airports.
Sources said that at least 18 airports in the northern and western parts of the country have been temporarily shut. These airports include Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Amritsar, Pathankot, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Shimla, Dharamshala and Jamnagar, they added.
According to the source, more than 200 flights to and from various airports have been cancelled by airlines, with IndiGo alone cancelling around 160 flights.
"Air India flights to and from the following stations&mdash;Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot&mdash;are being cancelled till 0529 hrs IST on 10 May following a notification from aviation authorities on the closure of these airports," the airline said.
In a post on X, the airline also said passengers holding valid tickets for travel during this period will be offered a one-time waiver on rescheduling charges or a full refund for cancellations.
IndiGo said that in the wake of the prevailing situation, flights to/from Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Leh, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Bikaner, and Jodhpur stand cancelled for the day.
"We are anticipating changes in flight schedules across our network and sincerely advise all customers to stay updated on their flight status before heading to the airport," the airline said in a post on X.
In an update on X, SpiceJet said airports in parts of northern India, including Dharamshala, Leh, Jammu, Srinagar, and Amritsar, are closed until further notice. Departures, arrivals, and consequential flights may be impacted. The affected passengers can opt for a full refund or an alternate flight as per availability, it added.
At least 35 flights to and from the Delhi airport, the country's largest and busiest airport, have been cancelled since 12 am, one of the sources said.
The source said that 23 domestic departures and eight arrivals were cancelled. Besides, four international departures were cancelled. Foreign carriers, including American Airlines, cancelled some of their services from the Delhi airport.
Akasa Air, in a post on X, said that due to the prevailing situation in the region, all its flights to and from Srinagar have been cancelled.
Regional carrier Star Air said its flights to/from Nanded, Hindon, Adampur, Kishangarh and Bhuj stand cancelled for the day.
Air India Express, in a post on X, said that in keeping with prevailing restrictions, multiple flights on our network are impacted, including cancellation of flights to and from Amritsar, Jammu, Srinagar, and Hindon, till mid-day. There was no further update immediatley.
"Kindly note, due to changing airspace conditions, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport," DIAL said in a post on X.
Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways, in a post on X, said it has temporarily suspended flights to Pakistan due to Pakistani airspace closure.

The intense shelling from across the border started shortly after Indian armed forces carried out missile attacks on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir to avenge the April 22 terror attack in south Kashmir&rsquo;s Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead.
The officials said the Indian Army is responding to the shelling in a befitting manner, resulting in many casualties on the enemy side after several of their posts engaged in firing were destroyed.
The worst-hit in the Pakistani shelling was Poonch district which accounted for all the civilian deaths, the officials said, adding 28 persons were also injured and the condition of some of them was stated to be critical.
The indiscriminate shelling by Pakistan created panic among the border residents who were forced to take refuge in underground bunkers or shift to safer places within or outside their villages, the officials said.
The shelling was reported from all along the LoC in Poonch, including Balakote, Mendhar, Mankote, Krishna Ghati, Gulpur, Kerni and even Poonch district headquarters, resulting in damage to dozens of residential houses, they said.
The officials identified the deceased as Balvinder Kour alias &ldquo;Ruby&rdquo; (33), Mohd Zain Khan (10), his elder sister Zoya Khan (12), Mohd Akram (40), Amrik Singh (55), Mohd Iqbal (45), Ranjeet Singh (48), Shakeela Bi (40) and Amarjeet Singh (47).
Ten persons, including five minor children were also injured in cross-border shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla district, while three others were injured in Rajouri district, the officials said, adding several houses also caught fire due to shelling in Karnah sector of Kupwara district.
Earlier, a defence spokesman said during the intervening night of May 6 and 7, the Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing, including artillery shelling, from posts across the LoC and International Border opposite Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the Indian Army is responding in a &ldquo;proportionate manner&rdquo;.
Army sources said Indian troops caused many casualties to the enemy forces after destroying several of their posts in the retaliatory action.
The cross-border firing between the two sides was going on in some sectors, including Poonch, when last reports were received, the sources said.
Authorities have ordered that all educational institutions in the five border districts of the Jammu region will remain closed on Wednesday.
"In view of the prevailing situation, all schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch will remain closed today," Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said on X.
This was the 13th consecutive night of unprovoked firing along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir, amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam attack.
"Pakistan again violates the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in Bhimber Gali in the Poonch-Rajauri area. The Indian Army is responding appropriately in a calibrated manner," the additional directorate general of public information (ADGPI) of the Indian Army wrote on X.
The ceasefire violations along the LoC and International Border (IB) have been very rare after India and Pakistan renewed the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.

In a decisive response to the deadly Pahalgam attack, India on Wednesday carried out missile strikes on terror targets across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The targeted sites included key strongholds of terrorist organizations, including Jaish-e-Mohammad&rsquo;s base in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba&rsquo;s camp in Muridke, as part of Operation Sindoor.
The military action, which took place two weeks after the tragic attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives, was described by Indian officials as measured, non-escalatory, and responsible. The statement was made at a media briefing by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Col. Sofia Qureshi, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.

Misri emphasized that the strikes were aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure and disabling terrorists likely to be sent across to India. "These actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and responsible," Misri stated. "They focused on dismantling the terrorist infrastructure and disabling those likely to be sent across to India."
Recalling the United Nations Security Council&rsquo;s statement on the Pahalgam attack, Misri underscored the need to hold accountable those responsible for the attack, including its perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors. He further added, &ldquo;India's latest action should be seen in this context.&rdquo;
Addressing the media, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh explained that the strikes were launched to deliver justice to the victims and families of the Pahalgam attack. &ldquo;Nine terror sites were targeted and successfully destroyed. The locations were selected to avoid any damage to civilian infrastructures and prevent civilian casualties,&rdquo; Singh said. The targets included terror camps in Muridke, Sialkot, Barnala, Kotli, and Mehmoona Joya.
Col. Qureshi also presented videos of the destruction of these terror camps, including the infamous Muridke camp where the 2008 Mumbai attacks&rsquo; perpetrators, David Headley and Ajmal Kasab, were trained. The operation, Singh stated, was carried out with precision to ensure there was no collateral damage.
The Foreign Secretary further noted that despite the passage of two weeks since the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan had failed to take any significant action against the terrorist infrastructure on its soil or in areas under its control. "Instead, all Pakistan has done is indulge in denial and allegations," Misri remarked. He pointed out that intelligence monitoring indicated that further attacks were imminent, leading to India&rsquo;s decision to act.
Misri continued, &ldquo;Our intelligence indicated that further attacks against India were impending. Thus, there was a compulsion to deter and preempt.&rdquo;
The attack in Pahalgam, according to Misri, was aimed at undermining the return to normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. He described the attack as &ldquo;marked with extreme barbarity,&rdquo; with victims killed at close range, in front of their families, and deliberately traumatised. &ldquo;The attack was clearly driven by the objective of undermining normalcy returning to Kashmir,&rdquo; he added.
Indian intelligence agencies had been closely monitoring terrorist activities, with concerns raised over more potential attacks. Misri said, &ldquo;Earlier this morning, India exercised its right to respond to deter such cross-border terrorism. Our actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportionate, and focused on dismantling terrorists' infrastructure.&rdquo;
The missile strikes are seen as a clear message to Pakistan that India will not tolerate the continued export of terrorism and will act decisively to protect its citizens.

Amid grow concern, 59 H3N2 Influenza cases detected in Odisha in 2 months

Amid sharp surge in H3N2 virus cases across the state, Health Secretary of Odisha on Sunday directed all district administrations to be vigilant and step up influenza-like illness (ILI).&nbsp;

A total 59 H3N2 Influenza cases has been confirmed out of 225 samples collected in the month of January and February this year in the State. Confirming this Director Dr Sanghamitra Pati, Regional Medical Research Center (RMRC) Bhubaneswar, said that "Symptoms are similar to the seasonal flu viruses including fever and cough etc."

In order to stop the absence of officers and employees in Tehsil offices and to end the inconvenience to the common people, the Punjab Government, led by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has taken a big decision and has given strict instructions to Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars to be present in government offices from 9 am to evening.
Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Hardip Singh Mundian today said this while directing the deputy commissioners to ensure the presence of officers in the tehsil offices. Besides, the attendance of Tehsildars, Naib Tehsildars, and Sub Registrars has also been directed to be recorded through the M-Seva app. For this, the GPS location of all the offices should be made available to the Revenue Department.
Mr. Mundian said that alternative arrangements should be made at vacant stations, keeping in mind the seniority and the availability of the required staff, so that no person who has come for registration has to face any problem. He also said that if any person has booked an appointment online on the website, then his registration should be ensured on the same day.&nbsp;
Financial Commissioner Revenue Anurag Verma also issued a letter to all the Deputy Commissioners to ensure strict compliance with the instructions issued by the Revenue Department. He said that the government's objective is that the common people should not face any problem in registering their properties.

In a major blow to Pakistan&rsquo;s ISI-backed cross-border terror networks amidst the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure state as per directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, Punjab Police&rsquo;s State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar, in joint operation with a central agency, recovered a large cache of terrorist hardware during an intelligence-led operation carried out at a secluded forested area near Tibba Nangal-Kular Road in SBS Nagar, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.
The recovered terrorist hardware includes two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), five P-86 Hand Grenades and one Wireless Communication Set with Accessories.
DGP Gaurav Yadav said that preliminary investigation has revealed that the recovered consignment was deliberately concealed by hostile operatives as part of a premeditated plan to disrupt public order in the state. Probe has also indicated a coordinated effort by Pakistan&rsquo;s ISI and allied terror outfits, to revive dormant sleeper cells in the state, he said.
The DGP said that these recoveries are part of Punjab Police&rsquo;s sustained crackdown on terror modules sponsored by Pakistan&rsquo;s ISI. Punjab Police remains firmly committed to neutralising these threats and safeguarding the state&rsquo;s peace and security, he added.
The development came close on the heels of SSOC Amritsar has recovered a consignment comprising IEDs, hand grenades, sophisticated weapons, and ammunition from an area near the Indo-Pak border in the Ajnala Sector. Similarly, three weeks back, Counter Intelligence Jalandhar had also busted a terror module with the arrest of four individuals after recovering one RPG, two IEDs, 2kg RDX, one remote control, two hand grenades with detonators, three pistols along with six magazines and 34 cartridges.
Sharing more details, AIG SSOC Amritsar Sukhminder Singh Mann said that an FIR under relevant provisions of law has been registered at Police Station State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar. Further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for concealing the recovered explosive material, he said.
A case FIR No. 28 dated 05.05.2025 has been registered under sections 25 of the Arms Act, Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act and sections 111 and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station SSOC, Amritsar.

In a significant push to boost cotton cultivation in the state, Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian ordered the Chief Agriculture Officers (CAOs) of eight districts of Malwa region to train and guide farmers on modern cotton farming techniques, besides ensuring strict compliance on pest control measures and enhance monitoring.
S. khudian, along with Dr. Basant Garg, &nbsp;Administrative Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, reviewed the block-wise progress of cotton crop cultivation across eight districts of the Malwa region including Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Sangrur, Moga and Faridkot.&nbsp;
The state has set an ambitious target of bringing 1.25 lakh hectares under cotton cultivation this season, the Agriculture Minister said while reaffirming the Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann led Punjab Government&rsquo;s commitment to strengthening Punjab&rsquo;s position as a leading producer of the "White Gold."&nbsp;
S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that the CM Mann led Punjab Government has announced a 33% subsidy on BT cotton hybrid seeds recommended by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana to reduce input cost on cotton growers, while simultaneously discouraging the cultivation of non-recommended hybrid seeds to enable farmers to adopt high-yielding and pest-resistant BT cotton hybrid seeds. Notably, the PAU has recommended 87 high-yielding, pest-resistant hybrid cotton seed varieties tailored for optimal growth in the state&rsquo;s agro-climatic conditions.
To address the persistent issue of pink bollworm infestation, S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian reviewed the status of managing and cleaning cotton stalks and leftover residues from the previous season, which serve as breeding grounds for the pink bollworm. He further informed that weed eradication campaign has also been initiated in the cotton belt for management of whitefly.
The campaign is carried out with the support of district administration, other departments and MGNREGA to destroy weeds standing alongside roads, canals and in abandoned sites etc.
S. Khudian asked the CAOs to ensure monitoring of pink bollworm in ginning factories and fumigation of cotton stock to control pink bollworm larvae in the ginneries.
Dr. Basant Garg apprised the Agriculture Minister that a massive outreach campaign will be launched, with 961 farmer awareness camps will be organised in the month of May to educate and motivate farmers to shift to cotton from water guzzling paddy crop. He also directed the Agriculture department officials to ensure the availability of quality seeds and fertilisers and conduct regular checking at seed and fertilisers stores. This proactive approach aims to protect farmers from potentially harmful or substandard agricultural inputs.
Director Agriculture Jaswant Singh said that the department will also establish large-scale demonstration in 1,875 hectares to showcase the best practices in cotton farming to helping farmers adopt modern techniques. A Joint Director-level officer has been designated as Nodal Officer for Cotton Crop to ensure seamless coordination and execution of policies.

Under the &lsquo;Yudh Nasheyan Virudh&rsquo; campaign led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is committed to making the state drug-free. As part of this initiative, an aggressive crackdown is underway against drug traffickers in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
Today, under the supervision of SSP Shubham Aggarwal, the district police and administration demolished an illegal construction in the Master Colony of Mandi Gobindgarh carried out by two female drug peddlers. This action sent a strong and clear message to individuals involved in the drug trade that the Punjab government is fully committed to eliminating this social evil and that no drug trafficker will be spared.
While reviewing the police and administrative action, MLA Gurinder Singh Garry Barring stated that Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann&rsquo;s vision of a vibrant and prosperous Punjab is being realized through the ground-level implementation of this anti-drug campaign. He mentioned that, previously, illegal properties built with drug money in the Amloh constituency had also been demolished twice.
On the occasion, SSP Shubham Aggarwal, accompanied by SP Rakesh Kumar Yadav and the police force, stated that the Punjab government is determined to completely eradicate the drug menace, and this goal is being successfully pursued in the district. He revealed that female drug peddlers Sania and her mother-in-law Surinder Kaur &mdash; both of whom have NDPS Act cases registered against them &mdash; had illegally occupied government land. During the demolition drive, the police ensured that law and order were maintained. The illegal construction was dismantled using bulldozers.
He added that both women are currently lodged in Nabha jail under various charges, including drug trafficking. SSP Aggarwal further shared that, under the 'War Against Drugs' campaign, more than 150 cases have been registered, and over 250 accused have been arrested in Fatehgarh Sahib district so far.
He emphasized that, under the directives of the Punjab Government, the combined efforts of the police, administration, general public, and media in this campaign have yielded significant results. He appealed to district residents that if anyone has concrete information about drug traffickers, they should report it via the state helpline or the district police helpline &mdash; all such information will be kept strictly confidential.
Shubham Aggarwal also stated that, as part of this campaign, more than 50 individuals trapped in drug addiction have been admitted to de-addiction centers and are receiving proper treatment. He affirmed that the "War Against Drugs" will continue relentlessly and that no individual involved in the drug trade will be spared under any circumstances.
