Investigations into the death of nine members of the family of two brothers in Maharashtra's Sangli district, which was earlier suspected to be a case of suicide pact due to harassment by money lenders, revealed that the deceased, including four children, were allegedly poisoned to death by a "mantrik" and his accomplice both of whom arrested, police said on Monday.
As per the preliminary probe, the main accused Abbas Mohammad Ali Bagwan allegedly killed the family of nine with the help of his accomplice as he didn't want to return the money he had taken from them under the pretext of locating a "hidden treasure" for them.
Bagwan and Dheeraj Surawase, both residents of Solapur, allegedly poisoned nine members of the Vanmore family to death by mixing poisonous substance in tea probably on the night of June 19, officials said.

Police had initially suspected that it was a suicide pact and arrested 15 lenders of the 25 accused on the charges of abetment of suicide of the nine members of the family that had borrowed money from them.
Popat Vanmore (54), who worked as a teacher, his brother and veterinarian Dr Manik Vanmore (49), their 74-year-old mother, wives and four children were found dead at their houses in Mhaisal village of Sangli district on Monday, police had said.
'Suicide' notes were found from the two houses, located 1.5 km apart from each other.
Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur range) Manoj Kumar Lohiya said Bagwan, who is a "mantrik", had taken a huge amount of money from the Vanmore brothers under the pretext of helping them explore "gupt dhan" (hidden treasure) and the family was frequently asking him to return the money as the promise regarding the treasure was not fulfilled.
A Sangli Police official said the police had stumbled upon the notes purportedly left behind by the Vanmore brothers in which they had mentioned the names of some lenders from whom they had borrowed the money.
He said the police felt something was amiss when they examined the suicide notes. Also, a bottle was found with only one of the nine bodies.
"Generally, in a suicide note, the person first writes the reason and then blames the people for the extreme step he is taking. In this case, the names of some people were written at the start of the notes. Both the notes didn't even mention that the family wanted to commit suicide. It seems that the accused might have misled the two brothers to write the names of the money lenders under some pretext to pass it off as a suicide pact,” the official said.
Speaking about the investigation, he said the police tracked the movements of all the deceased which led them to a vehicle.
“We then checked the CCTV footages on the roads and finally the vehicle was located in Solapur,” he added.
“The preliminary probe suggests that the accused mantrik and his accomplice reached the houses of the Vanmores (probably on June 19) and told them that he (Bagwan) would perform some rituals to find the hidden treasure. They sent the family members to the terrace of their houses, then called them down one by one, and asked them to consume tea which was laced with some poisonous substance,” the official said explaining the sequence of events of June 19-20.
Prima facie, Bagwan and Surawase committed the crime by going to the houses of the Vanmore brothers one after the another.
When asked about the motive behind the crime, the official said that police suspect Bagwan killed the family members as they were demanding their money back from Bagwan after he failed to locate the "hidden treasure" for them as promised.
According to police, the Vanmore brothers had given over Rs one crore to Bagwan in the hope that they will find "guptdhan".
Sangli Superintendent of Police, Dikshit Gedam, said Bagwan and Surawase are arrested and section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code will be invoked.

Recently, a senior IAS officer in Jammu and Kashmir claimed that he had become a victim of cyber fraud. Shahid Choudhary accused scamsters of impersonating him on WhatsApp by using his photograph. The criminals allegedly contacted Choudhary's friends and colleagues and sought financial help.
Days earlier, Chandigarh's police chief was targeted in a similar way. Fraudsters posed as Praveer Ranjan on WhatsApp and asked the DGP's acquintances to send Amazon gift cards.

In March, a similar scam took place in Kerala. A teacher in Kollam was duped of ₹14 lakh after fraudsters sent WhatsApp messages posing as Kerala's police chief. The teacher was told that she had won the lottery and would be booked if tax was not paid on the winnings. The number used to send the messages was reportedly registered in an Assam native's name.
Recent cases have highlighted at least 3 types of common scams which are perpetrated through WhatsApp and Facebook.
The first is WhatsApp hijacking. Scamsters try to log into their target's WhatsApp account by using that person's phone number. Then, to get the verification pin, the criminals pose as WhatsApp technicians. If the target shares the PIN, then scamsters gain access to the person's WhatsApp account. Subsequently, they send messages to the target's friends and family seeking money, or further OTPs.

The second type is the WhatsApp DP scam which we told you about earlier. For this, a WhatsApp account is created using a fake or virtual SIM. Then a government official's photograph is set as the profile picture. Subsequently, messages are sent to unsuspecting people seeking money or other favours.
Another type of scam involves fake Facebook accounts. In this, scamsters create fake accounts of their targets and then contact the target's friends and family. Covid troubles, and financial crisis are common excuses used by scamsters to seek money in this type of con.
With such cases emerging in various parts of the country, authorities have been spreading awareness and telling people how to stay safe.
Some of the basic precautions include not replying to messages from unknown numbers even if the profile picture is of a person whom you know. Do not transfer money without verifying the request offline with the person asking for help.
Do not share OTPs, passwords, bank details, and credit and debit card information under any circumstances. Do not install remote access apps, and do not click on suspicious links. Also, secure your social media accounts by enabling two-factor authentication.
Cyber criminals prey on people's lack of awareness to carry out their cons. So share this information as widely as possible to make such scams virtually impossible.

A video purportedly showing a government doctor checking an ailing woman on a rickshaw by the roadside instead of providing her a stretcher and admitting her to hospital has gone viral, following which the government has initiated proceedings to terminate him from service.
According to officials, the woman exhibited symptoms of HIV and her son-in-law carried her to the MMG District Hospital here in the rickshaw for anti-retroviral therapy. They were accompanied by the woman's husband and children.
However, Dr Sheel Verma attended to her in the rickshaw itself and referred her to Meerut Medical College. The incident took place on Wednesday, the officials said.
As the video went viral, Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak ordered Chief Medical Officer Dr Bhavtosh Shankhdhar to get an inquiry conducted into the incident.
Chief Medical Superintendent Manoj Kumar Chaturvedi, who conducted the inquiry on Thursday, said a report seeking Dr Verma's termination has been sent to the government, while ward boy Mayank, who accompanied the doctor, has already been sacked.

Another incident of brutal violence has been reported in Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, where a Zomato food delivery man named Vineet Kumar was brutally thrashed and abused by a group of people over a prejudice issue.
The situation was averted when Vineet went to deliver an order to the customer's house who then asked his name, on hearing his name customer refused to take the order from the hands of an 'untouchable' said Vineet.
Vineet also told the customer to cancel the order if he don't want to accept it but instead of this another 10-12 people came out of his house and started beating him, they also took Vineet's motorbike.
Police filed an FIR against them and will verify the CCTV footages of an area. Police also help Vineet to get back his motorbike.

Reports said on hearing Vineet's name, the accused customer refused to take the order from the hands, saying Vineet was an 'untouchable'.

A delivery boy was allegedly thrashed by a group of men in Uttar Pradesh's captial Lucknow after a customer refused to take food from his hands owing to the caste he belongs to.&nbsp; The Zomato delivery boy Vineet Kumar went to deliver an order to the customer's house who then asked his name. Reports said on hearing Vineet's name, the accused customer refused to take the order from the hands, saying Vineet was an 'untouchable', a derogatory term used for people belonging to Dalit castes.&nbsp;
In reponse, Vineet told the customer to cancel the order if he didn't want to accept the order. But reports said instead of returning the food, a group of 10-12 people who were in the house came out and started beating Vineet. The attackers also took Vineet's motorbike.
Police filed an FIR and will verify the CCTV footages of the area where the customer's house is located.&nbsp;

 Traffic in parts of central Delhi will be affected on Monday due to the Congress' protest against the Centre's Agnipath scheme and "vendetta politics" against Rahul Gandhi, according to traffic police.
Gandhi is being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald money laundering case and will appear before the agency for the fourth time on Monday.
In a series of tweets on Monday, the Delhi Traffic Police informed commuters about road closures.
Due to special traffic arrangements, inward movement of buses will be restricted in New Delhi beyond Gol Dak Khana Junction, Patel Chowk, Windsor Place, Teen Murti Chowk and Prithviraj Road, it said.
"Kindly avoid Gol Methi junction, Tughlak Road Junction, Claridges Junction, Q-point Junction, Sunehri Masjid Junction, Maulana Azad Road Junction & Man Singh Road Junction between 0800 hrs & 1200 hrs. Due to special arrangements there will be heavy traffic movement on these roads," it added.
The traffic police also advised commuters to avoid Motilal Nehru Marg, Akbar Road, Janpath and Man Singh Road between 8 am and 12 pm.
The ED probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper.
The newspaper is published by the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Private Limited.
The Congress, which has accused the Centre of targeting opposition leaders by misusing investigative agencies, has announced that it will hold peaceful protests on Monday against Gandhi's questioning by the ED.

Gandhi is being questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald money laundering case and will appear before the agency for the fourth time on Monday.
In a series of tweets on Monday, the Delhi Traffic Police informed commuters about road closures.
Due to special traffic arrangements, inward movement of buses will be restricted in New Delhi beyond Gol Dak Khana Junction, Patel Chowk, Windsor Place, Teen Murti Chowk and Prithviraj Road, it said.
"Kindly avoid Gol Methi junction, Tughlak Road Junction, Claridges Junction, Q-point Junction, Sunehri Masjid Junction, Maulana Azad Road Junction &amp; Man Singh Road Junction between 0800 hrs &amp; 1200 hrs. Due to special arrangements there will be heavy traffic movement on these roads," it added.
The traffic police also advised commuters to avoid Motilal Nehru Marg, Akbar Road, Janpath and Man Singh Road between 8 am and 12 pm.

The ED probe pertains to alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Limited, which owns the National Herald newspaper.
The newspaper is published by the Associated Journals Limited (AJL) and owned by Young Indian Private Limited.
The Congress, which has accused the Centre of targeting opposition leaders by misusing investigative agencies, has announced that it will hold peaceful protests on Monday against Gandhi's questioning by the ED.&nbsp;

Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar said the killed terrorist has been identified as a Pakistani, linked with the LeT terror outfit.
The IGP Kashmir tweeted, "2-3 more #terrorists alongwith arrested terrorist trapped in ongoing #encounter." "The arrested terrorist also got trapped," the police said.
Later, police said one more terrorist was killed in the Kupwara encounter. Heavy exchange of fire was going on, they said.
The police said the site of the second encounter was Damhal Hanji Pora area of Kulgam in south Kashmir.
They said two terrorists were killed in the exchange of fire so far.
IGP Kumar said one of them was affiliated with the LeT, while the other with the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit.
"So far, 02 killed #terrorists identified as Haris Sharief of #Srinagar (LeT C category) & Zakir Padder of #Kulgam (JeM C cat). #Operation in progress,” the IGP said on Twitter.

Protest over the "Agnipath" scheme continued to the third day. A huge crowd of youth gathered at the various railway stations across the country.
Now Madhya Pradesh's Indore reported the same where protestors indulged in stone-pelting and forced the railway authorities to stop some trains, Indore police commissioner Harinarayan Chari Mishra told.
When the situation gone out of control polices uses tear gas shells and are also cane-charged to disperse the mob.
Miahra further added in an incident, two police officers got minor injuries, and so far police have arrested 15 protestors and necessary action will be taken against them.

The Trinamool Congress got Rs 42 crore from donations and contributions, Rs 18 crore as fees and subscriptions, Rs 3 crore from other sources, and Rs 10 crore was sundry balance written off.
The NCP got Rs 26 crore from grants and donations, Rs 8 crore from coupon and publication sale, Rs 0.3 crore as interest on FDs, and Rs 7 lakh from other sources.
The DMK got Rs 113 crore from grants and donations, Rs 23 crore as fees and subscriptions, Rs 12 crore as interest on bank deposits, and Rs 40 lakhs from other sources. The Aam Aadmi Party got Rs 16 crore from donations, Rs 0.8 crore as interest income, and Rs 0.1 crore as fees and subscriptions.
Political funding is a controversial issue in India. Activists have long pressed for reform in the area, seeking greater transparency.
In recent years, electoral bonds have become a major bone of contention. Critics have claimed that electoral bonds allow donors to remain anonymous, making the use of black money and money laundering easier. In response, the Narendra Modi government has claimed that electoral bonds actually enhance transparency, as identity of the donor is available in bank records.
With hundreds of crores of rupees going to political parties every year, greater scrutiny of the source of this big money will only strengthen Indian democracy.

Parts of Delhi received heavy rains on Thursday morning bringing respite from sweltering heat and humid weather, as the mercury settled at 27.6 degrees Celsius in the morning.
Delhi had reeled under sultry weather on Wednesday when the maximum temperature was recorded at 40.9 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season's average.
Conditions are favourable for the monsoon to reach the capital either on Thursday or Friday, the India Meteorological Department earlier said.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is yet to declare the arrival of the monsoon in the capital.
"An official statement will be made after reviewing the rainfall data in the region," a senior IMD official said.
The MeT office had earlier said the monsoon would reach the capital on Thursday or Friday.
The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the national capital on June 27.
However, Mahesh Palawat, vice-president (climate change and meteorology), Skymet Weather, confirmed these are the first monsoon showers in the region. &nbsp;Most parts of the capital reported a fresh spell of rain.
The IMD has issued an orange alert, warning of heavy rainfall in some areas in the city on Thursday and moderate rainfall on Friday. The maximum temperature will come down to 34-35 degrees Celsius.

Expressing grief over the deaths, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each victim.
In the statement, he also appealed to the people to take precautions during inclement weather and follow the directions issued by the Disaster Management Department.
“Stay at home and stay safe in bad weather,” he said.
On June 20, 17 people died in lightning strikes across the state.
