14 dogs kept tied up in house without food for 2-3 yrs; finally rescued in Delhi

In a shocking incident, more than a dozen dogs were kept tied up in miserable conditions inside a house for the last 2-3 years.

Fourteen street dogs were rescued from the apartment in south Delhi's Greater Kailash area on July 6.

The resident of the flat, a woman, had allegedly kept the canines confined without proper nutrition and care. She lived in the house without electricity, and the dogs' waste was littered outside the flat and on the staircase, police said.

On the complaint of VK Sinha, a case was registered and an investigation was carried out.

During the investigation, the site was visited and the alleged woman was repeatedly requested to hand over the dogs to Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) teams for their treatment, but she was not cooperating, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chandan Choudhary said.

A search warrant was issued from the court and the woman was again requested to hand over the dogs to the SPCA team for their treatment, but she did not comply, police said. Subsequently, a joint team of police, SPCA, IHBAS and MCD along with two local residents was formed and the team reached the spot where experts of MCD and SPCA inspected the site and gave their report, police said.

The report mentioned that it was essential to rescue dogs to save their lives, following which a rescue operation was conducted in the presence of the alleged woman, they said.

The dogs were rescued and shifted to a veterinary hospital in animal vans for further treatment. The alleged woman was counselled by the IBHAS team in the presence of her counsel, police added.
