Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Murder case against Union Minister's son, others

Lakhimpur Kheri Case: A murder case has been filed against the son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra for allegedly running a car over protesting farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

At least 14 other people have also been named in the FIR. Four farmers were among eight people killed in the incident.

The farmers have alleged that minister's son Ashish Mishra had mowed down protesting farmers during the protest.

The minister and his son have on the other hand maintained that they were not at the scene of violence, and that their driver and workers were attacked and killed by the protesters.

"My son wasn't present at the spot. There were miscreants who attacked workers with sticks and swords. Had my son been there, he wouldn't have come out alive," Mr Mishra, the junior Home Minister, was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. "My son was present at the venue of the (Deputy Chief Minister's) event... all through, I was accompanying the deputy chief minister," he said.

The farmers had assembled to block the visit of Union Minister Ajay Mishra and UP Dy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya's visit as they were upset over a recent speech by Mishra. Late last month, Mishra had brushed off the protests against the farm laws, saying it was a protest of "10-15 people and it would take just two minutes to make them fall in line".
