Lakhimpur Kheri incident: SC again raps UP govt probe says 'not how we expected'

Expressing displeasure of the status report filed by the Uttar Pradesh government on the October 3 Lakhimpur Kheri incident, the Supreme Court said that a judge of a different High Court will be monitoring the proceedings till the chargesheet is filed.

During the last hearing, the Supreme Court had asked the Yogi Adityanath government to list in a status report how many had been arrested and on what charges.

Chief Justice NV Ramana remarked during the hearing that 10 days have passed and there is nothing in the status report except saying that some more witnesses examined.

Ten people, including Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra, have been arrested so far in connection with the case.

The top court is hearing the matter after two lawyers had written a letter to the CJI seeking a high-level judicial inquiry, also involving the CBI, into the incident.
