Kolkata Police Arrest Man Linked to Nabanna Abhiyan Assault

Kolkata, Aug 13 (PTI) Sleuths from Kolkata Police have apprehended an individual on Wednesday in connection with the assault on the guard of an IPS officer during the 'Nabanna Abhiyan', a march toward the West Bengal Secretariat that occurred last week. An officer reported the arrest.

The detained person, identified as Chandan Gupta from Jagatdal in the North 24 Parganas district, was arrested on Wednesday morning in the Bow Bazar area of central Kolkata. He is currently under interrogation.

"The individual has been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for the attempted murder of constable Prasanta Poddar, the guard of DC SSD Bidisha Kalita Dasgupta," the officer stated. The investigation to locate other suspects continues.

The march, which took place on August 9, witnessed chaos and violent protests in the streets of Kolkata and adjoining Howrah. This date marked the one-year anniversary of the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In connection with the march, seven FIRs were lodged against various individuals, including BJP MLAs Ashok Dinda and Agnimitra Paul alongside other leaders. They were accused of obstructing security personnel, engaging in assault, and causing public property damage during the march on August 9.

Notably, the father of the deceased doctor from the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital lodged an FIR accusing the police of torturing his wife during the protest.
