Law Student Traumatized After Alleged Gang-Rape at Kolkata College

Kolkata, Jul 2 (PTI) - The chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women, Leena Gangopadhyay, stated on Wednesday that the law student, who was allegedly gang-raped at her college in Kolkata, remains "traumatised." Despite having undergone counseling, more sessions are deemed necessary for the first-year student who was subjected to this heinous act by three men, including an alumnus and two seniors from her institute, on the evening of June 25. The three accused men and a security guard on duty at the South Calcutta Law College during the incident have been arrested and are currently in police custody. Gangopadhyay has called for stringent punishment for all individuals involved in this crime. "We have spoken to the victim; she is visibly traumatised. Her hands were shaking, and the pain was evident on her face. She recounted that one person raped her while the other two facilitated and observed the act," Gangopadhyay remarked. Allegations indicate that Monojit Mishra, the alumnus and a contractual employee of the college, perpetrated the rape of the 24-year-old woman, while current students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee recorded the incident on mobile phones. "The victim requires additional counseling sessions. Ensuring her safety and security must be our priority," Gangopadhyay emphasized. "We will advocate for severe punishment for all culprits. Those who witnessed and assisted in the crime are equally culpable," she added. This egregious incident at the law college has rekindled memories of the tragic rape and murder of an on-duty postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year. PTI SCH NN
