Kolkata Law College Gang Rape: Monojit Mishra's Criminal Past Unveiled

Kolkata, Jun 30 (PTI) — The primary suspect in the notorious Kolkata law college gang rape case, Monojit Mishra, is a prolific offender with numerous unresolved cases involving sexual harassment and violent crimes, according to police reports on Monday. He is not only linked to criminal activities at the South Calcutta Law College, where he allegedly orchestrated the sexual assault on his latest victim on June 25, but has also been previously detained and charge-sheeted for violent acts committed outside the campus. Authorities have obtained copies of at least seven formal complaints and FIRs, in addition to the latest gang rape FIR, indicating Mishra and two other students as accused. The ex-student has outstanding cases of sexual assault at various police stations across south Kolkata, including Kasba, Gariahat, Kalighat, Tollygunge, and Anandapur. In 2013, Mishra disappeared from the police's radar the same year he enrolled at the law college, following accusations of stabbing a youth on the Chetla Bridge under Kalighat police jurisdiction, which led to his expulsion from the institution. By then, he had already joined the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad and held significant sway within the college, a former student recollected. In December 2016, Mishra was accused of spearheading a mob of outsiders to vandalize the college premises. FIRs and counter-FIRs were lodged at the Kasba police station regarding the incident, yet the cases mysteriously vanished, said Titas Manna, a former student, to a local news channel. Mishra reemerged in 2017, re-enrolling at the same college to study law, and remained a student until his graduation in 2022. Fellow students describe him as a 'perpetual troublemaker' who harassed female students inside the TMCP-run union office on campus over trivial matters. Official complaints reveal a persistent and troubling pattern of sexual misconduct exhibited by Mishra over the years. Survivors of his assaults allege systemic protection enabled him to act with impunity. In 2018, two female students lodged complaints against Mishra to college authorities and the Gariahat police, citing molestation and threats. A case commenced, with victims providing confidential statements to a judicial magistrate; however, no arrests were made, Manna informed a local TV channel. Another FIR was filed against Mishra for outraging a woman's modesty in 2022, and in May 2024, the college authorities accused him of assaulting a security guard in their police complaint. Manna professed ignorance regarding any further legal actions against Mishra, emphasizing how he went unpunished repeatedly. Known as 'Mango' among friends, Mishra frequently summoned girls to the union room, indulged in alcohol, and ignored multiple cautions. While college authorities were aware of his antics, they chose to ignore them due to his influence. Some students lodged formal sexual harassment complaints with faculty, to no avail. Another former female student claimed Mishra molested one of her friends during a student picnic. Manna mentioned that, despite losing his official TMCP position, Mishra continued to exert influence until recent events. Mishra, self-declared as the president of the college's TMCP unit, was ousted by the organization amidst multiple warnings to stay off-campus. He framed two other students, causing their arrests for a self-inflicted wound, effectively ruining their lives with ongoing court appearances. No student dared oppose him, as he ruled the campus with impunity, staying until late evening hours. Rumors circulated that he secured a position as a casual employee of the college as a record keeper, further emboldened by his political ties.
