Kolkata employee stabs colleagues over leave dispute

In a shocking incident in Kolkata's Newtown area, a West Bengal government employee, identified as Amit Kumar Sarkar, allegedly stabbed four colleagues after a disagreement over leave.

Sarkar, who works in the technical education department at Karigari Bhavan, reportedly resorted to violence following the denial of his leave request.

A video later surfaced showing Sarkar brandishing a bloodstained knife in broad daylight, carrying a bag on his back and another in his hand, while warning passersby not to approach him.

The unsettling footage captured people recording the scene on their mobile phones.

According to a senior police official, Sarkar, a resident of Ghola in Sodepur, North 24 Parganas district, attacked his colleagues—Jaydeb Chakraborty, Santanu Saha, Sartha Late, and Sheikh Satabul—after the dispute. All four were rushed to a nearby hospital, where two are reported to be in critical condition.

Officials revealed that the altercation began when Sarkar was denied leave, culminating in the violent outburst. The reasons for the leave denial remain unclear. Sarkar has since been apprehended by law enforcement, and an investigation is ongoing. Authorities have suggested that mental health issues may have played a role in the incident.
