Kochi: Private Lab Partners Arrested for Fake Medical Certificates

Kochi: Police conducted a raid on a private laboratory in Kalamassery and arrested its two partners for allegedly issuing fraudulent medical fitness certificates, officials revealed on Monday. The partners, Chandrabose (55) from Perumbavoor and Shibi Jose (51) from Poonithura, were apprehended on Sunday.

The case surfaced after Dr. Ribu Sam Stephen, a former associate professor at Palakkad Medical College, discovered that counterfeit certificates had been issued bearing his name to individuals recruited by companies both in India and overseas. The alarming situation prompted a police investigation spearheaded by Thrikkakara Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shiju PS.

During the probe, law enforcement officials unearthed fake seals and fabricated medical certificates purportedly used to validate potential workers for various domestic and international firms, according to the police statement. The investigation indicated that the laboratory had been issuing these certificates without performing necessary health examinations, a mandatory process that should be conducted in the presence of a certified doctor.

Many companies, including international enterprises, had entrusted this lab with the task of conducting medical screening for new recruits from Kerala for several years. Authorities suspect that seals impersonating other legitimate doctors were also employed in the creation of these phony fitness documents.

The apprehended partners have been presented in court and are currently in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
