Kishor Barman Joins Tripura Cabinet, Boosts BJP's Legislative Strength

Agartala, Jun 3 (PTI) — Kishor Barman, a BJP MLA from the Nalchar constituency in Sepahijala district, has officially joined the Tripura cabinet as a minister. The 44-year-old was sworn in on Thursday by Governor N Indrasena Reddy at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan. With this new appointment, the cabinet led by Chief Minister Manik Saha has expanded to include 12 members. The BJP now holds nine positions, including that of the chief minister, in the cabinet. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) holds two seats, with the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) holding one. Despite this, no representatives from TMP and IPFT attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Opposition members from the CPI(M) and Congress were also notably absent. Chief Minister Saha expressed his welcome to Barman, articulating the administration's aim to make "Ek Tripura, Shrestha Tripura" (One Tripura, Best Tripura). He expressed hope that Barman would contribute to this objective. While Saha mentioned that portfolio allocations would be decided in the near future, he affirmed that the BJP would manage the election of its state party president in a timely and orderly fashion.

Kishor Barman extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP general secretary B L Santosh, and Chief Minister Manik Saha for his appointment. Barman has yet to discuss his portfolio with Saha, but emphasized his continued commitment to the party's directives, citing his disciplined approach over the years. Having returned to Tripura in 2021, Barman was appointed as the party's state general secretary. He subsequently contested and won the 2023 assembly elections from the Nalchar assembly constituency in the Sepahijala district by a decisive margin.
