'Kill Modi' comment: MP police detain Congress leader Raja Pateria over controversial speech

Madhya Pradesh police detained Congress leader Raja Pateria on 13 December, a day after his speech against Prime Minister Narendra Modi went viral.

In the speech, Pateria is accused of exhorting people to "be ready to kill Modi" to "save the Constitution". Pateria claimed that he was being misquoted, and by "kill", he meant defeat in elections.

Pateria was detained from his residence in Damoh after Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra ordered the registration of an FIR.

MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan targeted Congress over Pateria's remarks, saying that the reality of those who are undertaking the Bharat Jodo Yatra is coming to the fore.

Earlier, state BJP chief VD Sharma shared the video clip of Pateria and demanded an inquiry wondering if there is a plot to assassinate the prime minister.

The Congress, meanwhile, expressed dismay.

"Absolutely reprehensible! No such words should be used against the prime minister or against anyone. The Congress party denounces, condemns such statements," AICC head of media and publicity department Pawan Khera said when asked about the comments in the national capital.
