Monsoon hits Kerala, northeastern states, a day earlier than predicted

The Indian weather department on Thursday said that the southwest monsoon made onset over Kerala, a day earlier than predicted.

Taking to social media X, the Indian Meteorological Department has said that the monsoon has advanced into most parts of Northeast India.

On May 15, the weather office announced the onset of monsoon over Kerala by May 31.

Weather scientists said that Cyclone Remal, which ripped through West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, had pulled the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which could be one of the reasons for early onset over the northeast.

Kerala has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days resulting in a surplus of May rainfall, the weather office data showed.

The normal monsoon onset date for Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam is June 5.

Meanwhile, the weather department has forecast light rain and dust storms later in the day in Delhi on May 30th.

On Wednesday evening, there was a sudden change in weather with drizzle in some parts of the city. The maximum temperature is likely to reach 45 degrees Celsius. The humidity level was 36 per cent at 8.30 am.
