Kerala Schools Reopen with Festive Joy Post-Summer Break

Alappuzha (Kerala), June 2 (PTI) - On Monday, over 40 lakh children returned to their schools across Kerala as educational institutions reopened following a two-month summer break. The state had recently experienced heavy rainfall across most districts, marking the onset of the southwest monsoon. However, Monday morning saw comparatively pleasant weather, facilitating the return of students.

In both urban and rural areas, schools buzzed with excitement as children, carrying new books, bags, and sporting fresh uniforms, marked the beginning of their new academic session. Teachers worked diligently to decorate their schools with festoons, balloons, and coconut leaves to warmly welcome the students.

In many schools, authorities along with parent-teacher associations organized traditional live drum performances to greet the newcomers. Reports indicate that over two lakh children have enrolled in the first standard across Kerala’s government and aided sectors, with exact figures expected to be released later, according to official sources.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the "Praveshanotsavam 2026-26," the formal ceremony marking the reopening of schools, by lighting a traditional lamp at a state-run higher secondary school in Alappuzha. The event also saw the launch of the state-level distribution of study materials.

Addressing the gathering, Vijayan emphasized the importance of imbuing children with more than just knowledge; encouraging critical thinking, secular values, and democratic awareness as key education objectives.

The CM also addressed the need for teachers to continually update their knowledge. Vijayan highlighted the importance of creating an environment that fosters curiosity and supports students in overcoming their fears and concerns.

During the event, he shared insights into the comprehensive changes the state government is implementing for the new academic year.

The function was also attended by General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, Fisheries Minister Saji Cheriyan, and other representatives.

Among the notable changes for the new academic session, the state government has introduced adjusted school timings for high schools and an emphasis on value-based education.
