Kerala Rains: Red Alert Issued in Three Districts Amid Floods

Kerala Rains: Red Alert Issued in Three Districts Amid Floods

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 26 (PTI) The monsoon rains have intensified in Kerala as of Thursday, leading to flooding in parts of the Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has subsequently issued a red alert for three districts.

Heavy rains and strong winds have caused significant disruptions, including the toppling of hoardings in various locations, such as the state capital. Trees have been uprooted, leading to challenges in daily life.

The red alert has been issued for Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts, while an orange alert has been announced in seven other districts. A red alert indicates that there will be heavy to extremely heavy rain exceeding 20 cm within 24 hours. An orange alert signals very heavy rain ranging between 11 cm and 20 cm, while a yellow alert denotes heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.

The state irrigation department has also issued warnings regarding rivers with dangerously high water levels due to the continuous rain. Alerts have been raised for the Muvattupuzha River in Ernakulam district, Bharathapuzha across Thrissur and Malappuram, and multiple rivers such as Achankovil and Pamba in Pathanamthitta. Additionally, Manimala River in Kottayam, Thodupuzha River in Idukki, and Kabani River in Wayanad are being closely monitored.

As the water levels rise, flooding has affected low-lying areas in the Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Idukki districts. This has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of residents who have been relocated to relief camps.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rains in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala region of Wayanad district have resulted in the Chooralmala River being in a strong spate. The forceful, muddy waters are eroding the banks near the Bailey bridge.

It is worth noting that just last year in July, the region was devastated by deadly landslides that claimed over 200 lives and destroyed numerous homes.
