Kerala Human Rights Commission Probes Police Assault on Youth Leader

Thrissur (Kerala), Sep 4 (PTI) – The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has suo motu initiated an investigation into an incident involving the assault of a Youth Congress leader by police officers at the Kunnamkulam police station, an event that took place two years ago.

CCTV footage from the Kunnamkulam police station, which emerged on Wednesday, depicts V S Sujith, a local Youth Congress leader, being assaulted by five police officials within the premises of the station.

Sujith claims that he obtained this footage only after a prolonged legal struggle via the Right to Information Act (RTI).

According to Sujith, he was taken into custody on April 5, 2023, after he questioned the officers for allegedly misbehaving with and threatening his friends, who were standing by the roadside.

Following the release of the footage, KSHRC member V Geetha has instructed the Thrissur District Police Chief to conduct an urgent inquiry into the matter and provide a detailed report within three weeks.

The incident has sparked demands from Congress leaders, calling for stringent action against the officers involved.

On Wednesday night, a protest march was organized in front of the Kunnamkulam police station. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has demanded the immediate dismissal of the officers implicated in this case of custodial torture.

The police revealed that disciplinary action had been taken against the five officers accused of manhandling Sujith following a custodial torture complaint filed against them in 2023.

Additionally, the Judicial First-Class Magistrate of Kunnamkulam has officially registered a case, and the trial is ongoing, according to a police officer.
