Thane, May 27 (PTI): The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) in Thane district has recorded its first COVID-19 fatality as a woman succumbed to the virus while being treated at a hospital, an official confirmed.

Dr. Deepa Shukla, the officer in charge of KDMC's Medical Health Department, confirmed the death on Monday.

She reported that four individuals infected with COVID-19 have been detected within the municipal limits, following a rise in coronavirus cases in parts of Maharashtra, including nearby Mumbai.

Among these patients, one woman passed away, another with mild symptoms was discharged after treatment, a third is receiving care in a private hospital, and the fourth has been transferred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Hospital in Kalwa for additional treatment, as informed by Shukla.

Despite the emergence of cases, Shukla urged citizens to remain calm and appealed for strict adherence to health precautions.

The Medical Health Department advised those with co-morbidities and senior citizens to avoid crowded, enclosed places and prioritize wearing masks in public.

Practicing hand hygiene, avoiding spitting in public, and using handkerchiefs or similar items when sneezing or coughing were also emphasized.

Citizens experiencing symptoms such as cold, cough, body ache, sore throat, or breathing difficulties are advised to consult a doctor promptly and undergo testing for COVID-19.

Avoiding contact with individuals suffering from respiratory disorders is also recommended.

KDMC has prepared isolation rooms with ventilation at Bai Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan and Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivali, both offering tongue tests for coronavirus, according to the department.

Meanwhile, an official update from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Public Relations Officer (PRO) disclosed that 36 COVID-19 cases have been detected so far in the city, with one death reported.

Nine patients are hospitalised and stable, while 20 are in home quarantine, the update indicated.
