Indian Railways Launches Parcel Vans for Kashmiri Fruit Export

Srinagar, Sep 11 (PTI) — In a significant step for Kashmir's horticulture sector, the Indian Railways has initiated the operation of two dedicated parcel vans to facilitate the export of fruits from Kashmir to Jammu and Delhi, as announced by officials on Thursday.

This development is set to alleviate the challenges faced by the horticulture sector in the Kashmir Valley, which has been reeling from losses following the extended closure of National Highway 44. Torrential rains and floods in the Union Territory had rendered the Srinagar-Jammu highway inaccesible, causing significant disruption.

According to railway officials, the newly launched service will start transporting the Valley's fruits from Budgam station in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday. These two parcel vans are destined for Delhi and Jammu, carrying a consignment of the season's finest Kashmiri apples.

This initiative marks the beginning of a transformative era in logistics for Kashmir, providing a faster and more reliable route for transporting the Valley's renowned horticultural produce to national markets, as highlighted by railway officials.

"By shifting the reliance away from vulnerable road routes, these direct rail services inaugurate a new chapter in the region's commerce, expected to invigorate the horticulture sector and boost the overall economy of Kashmir," they further added.
