Karnataka CM Change Speculation: Kharge Emphasizes High Command's Role Amidst Political Tensions

Bengaluru, Jun 30 (PTI) - Amidst growing discussions among Congress leaders in Karnataka over a potential change in the state's Chief Minister, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized that such decisions rest with the party high command. He advised against unwarranted speculations.

Kharge was addressing media queries concerning claims by some Congress leaders about a possible leadership change in October.

"See, the decision lies with the high command. It's beyond anyone here to predict what the high command is thinking. The high command holds the authority to take necessary actions, but it's important not to create unnecessary issues," he stated to reporters.

When Congress came to power in Karnataka in 2023, rumors suggested a rotational leadership involving Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar, each serving for 2.5 years. The party has neither confirmed nor denied these reports. Currently, Siddaramaiah is serving as the Chief Minister, while Shivakumar is the Deputy Chief Minister.

In the midst of these speculations, Congress General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, met with party legislators in Bengaluru to address signs of unrest and speculation about leadership changes.

Commenting on Surjewala’s visit, Kharge remarked, "Surjewala is here. Based on the feedback he collects, we will decide the next steps."

Meanwhile, R Ashoka, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, labeled Kharge an "accidental" AICC President, questioning who the real decision-makers are within the Congress.

In a post on 'X', Ashoka critiqued, "First, it was Dr. Manmohan Singh, the PM with the chair but not the command. Now, it’s Mallikarjun Kharge, who admits he doesn’t know the 'high command's thoughts."

He inquired, "If Kharge isn't the high command, then who is it? Rahul Gandhi? Sonia Gandhi? Priyanka Gandhi? Or an unseen committee?" He further alleged that Congress decisions are made "behind closed doors at 10 Janpath."

Ashoka accused Kharge of not leading the Congress but of conducting a "masterclass in con-graceful surrender,” stating that it's the "same script, new actor," directed by the Gandhi family.

Congress had not responded to Ashoka's remarks at the time of reporting.
