The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Wednesday rescued all 22 crew members of a vessel that was flooded mid-sea near Gujarat’s Porbandar coast. 
The maritime law enforcement agency swung into action after receiving flooding distress alerts from the crew of MT Global King. It diverted its assets including merchant ships and its newly-commissioned ALH Dhruv choppers to carry out the rescue operation. 
The vessel had left from Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and was on its way to Karwar in Karnataka, when there was sudden, uncontrolled flooding on board, prompting the crew to initiate a distress call. It was carrying 6,000 tonnes of Bitumen, a semi-solid form of petroleum also known as Asphalt, onboard.

SpiceJet will now be "doubly careful" and strengthen inspection of aircraft before they leave to operate flights, airline's CMD Ajay Singh said on Wednesday.
Aviation regulator DGCA issued a showcause notice to SpiceJet on Wednesday following eight technical malfunction incidents involving the airline's planes in the last 18 days.
"We will work with them (DGCA) to ensure that if they feel that there are any gaps at all in our system, we will address them. There is nothing more important than safety," Singh told PTI in an interview.
He said none of the incidents that have happened in the last few weeks have anything to do with shortage of spare parts.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in its show-cause notice, mentioned the financial audit of SpiceJet in September 2021 according to which the airline is not paying component vendors regularly and that has led to shortage of spare parts.
"A lot of these incidents that are being reported are relatively minor in nature and happen to every airline. This is nothing unique," he said.
When you have thousands of flights, sometimes the air conditioning will fail, sometimes a bird will hit the plane, and sometimes a fuel indicator will light up, he said.
"These things are going to happen and, of course, we have to minimise that to the greatest extent possible. That is our job and it is the regulator's job to push us to make things better, which we will do," he said.
When asked what changes SpiceJet will now undertake to deal with the safety concerns, he said, "We have to be doubly careful. We will rigorously inspect aircraft when they leave for a flight, which we already do, but we will strengthen the inspection." He said SpiceJet has asked the DGCA to take a look into the working of the airline because the processes that it follows have been audited several times by the regulator and in the 15 years that SpiceJet has flown, there has been nothing significant that has really transpired on its aircraft.

After Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), India has now reportedly proposed to hold the G-20 meeting in 2023 in the Union Territory of Ladakh as well. The move might provoke a response from China which has already expressed its displeasure over New Delhi’s plans to host the intergovernmental summit in J&K next year.
India, which will be hosting the 2023 G-20 summit, on June 30 stated it is considering several venues for the meeting and J&K could be one such venue. The same day China echoed close ally Pakistan’s objection to India’s plans and said that relevant sides should avoid "unilateral moves" that may "complicate" the situation. “China's position on the Kashmir issue is consistent and clear-cut. The Kashmir issue, a dispute left from the past, should be peacefully and properly addressed in accordance with the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreement,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a media briefing. This comes at a time when bilateral relations between India and China are at their lowest following a major standoff between the armies of the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) which is yet to be resolved.  
If the proposal materialises, this will be the first international summit to be held in J&K and Ladakh post August 2019 which is when the Centre abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated the state provoking strong reaction from both China and Pakistan.

The city of Bengaluru in Karnataka finds itself in a dilemma following the release of an international report which ranks it the 'least liveable' city in India, even beating Delhi which is often considered 'unliveable' owing to its high levels of pollution. This is after the silicon valley of India topped the central government's 'Ease of Living Index' in 2020.&nbsp;
Released on June 24, the Global Liveability Index 2022 prepared by the European Intelligence Unit (EUI) ranked 173 cities based on their liveability or living conditions, determined by five factors- including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.&nbsp;
The index ranked five Indian cities: Delhi, which ranked the best at 140, followed by Mumbai at 141, Chennai at 142, Ahmedabad at 143, and Bengaluru at 146. As per the report, the ideal rank for cities is under 100, but all Indian cities have scored way beyond the mark.
Bengaluru recieved a score of 46.4 out of 100 in the field of infrastructure, way below our neighbour Pakistan's largest city Karachi which scored 51.8 on the indicator and figured among the five least lievable cities in the world in the index.&nbsp;
Infrastructure is given 20 percent weightage by the EIU and is judged based on the quality of roads, public transportation system, international links, energy provision, telecommunications, water, and availability of good quality housing.
The highest weightage is attached to stability and culture and environment, which account for 25 percent each, followed by healthcare and infrastructure with 20 percent each and education with 10 percent. &nbsp;
Austria's Vienna ranked the highest on the index followed by other European and Canadian cities such as Copenhagen, Zurich, Calgary, and Vancouver that made it to the top five liveable cities. The Syrian capital, Damascus is the least livable city in the world, as per the report.

SpiceJet has failed to "establish safe, efficient and reliable air services" under the terms of Rule 134 and Schedule XI of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, the notice issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated.
"The review (of the incidents) transpires that poor internal safety oversight and inadequate maintenance actions (as most of the incidents were related to either component failure or system-related failure) have resulted in degradation of the safety margins," it added.
The DGCA has given the airline three weeks to respond to the notice.
"Financial assessment carried out by DGCA in September 2021 has also revealed that the airline is operating on 'cash-and-carry' (model) and suppliers/approved vendors are not being paid on a regular basis, leading to shortage of spares and frequent invoking of MELs (minimum equipment lists)," the notice read.
Reacting to the DGCA notice, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia asserted that passenger safety is paramount.
"Even the smallest error hindering safety will be thoroughly investigated and course-corrected," the minister said in a tweet.
At least eight incidents of technical malfunction have taken place on SpiceJet planes in the last 18 days.
On Tuesday, a SpiceJet freighter aircraft, which was heading to Chongqing in China, returned to Kolkata as the pilots realised after the take-off that its weather radar was not working.
On Tuesday itself, the airline's Delhi-Dubai flight was diverted to Karachi due to a malfunctioning fuel indicator and its Kandla-Mumbai flight did priority landing in Maharashtra's capital city after cracks developed on its windshield mid-air.
On July 2, a SpiceJet flight heading to Jabalpur returned to Delhi after the crew members observed smoke in the cabin at an altitude of around 5,000 feet.
Fuselage door warnings lit up on two separate SpiceJet planes while taking off on June 24 and June 25, forcing the aircraft to abandon their journeys and return.
On June 19, an engine on the carrier's Delhi-bound aircraft carrying 185 passengers caught fire soon after it took off from the Patna airport and the plane made an emergency landing minutes later. The engine malfunctioned because of a bird hit.
In another incident on June 19, a SpiceJet flight for Jabalpur had to return to Delhi due to cabin pressurisation issues.
The airline has been making losses for the last three years. It incurred a net loss of Rs 316 crore, Rs 934 crore and Rs 998 crore in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively.

The Air Force in a tweet said that the process of online registration under the Agnipath scheme has been completed and it has received 7,49,899 applications,  highest in any recruitment cycle. Previous record was 6,31,528. 
The registration process began on June 24 amid widespread and violent protests against the new short-term recruitment scheme for the armed forces. 
Under the Agnipath scheme, those aged between 17-and-a-half and 21 years would be inducted into the armed forces for a four-year tenure and 25 per cent of them will be inducted for regular service subsequently.
The government had, on June 16, increased the upper-age limit for recruitment under the scheme to 23 years from 21 for the year 2022 to accomodate those aspirants who lost 2 years because of Covid-19 as no recruitment was done during that time.

At least 150 students were stranded in a government high school in a village in Dharwad district as a nearby rivulet overflowed due to torrential rains on Thursday, authorities said.
The downpour started at about 3 pm, they said.
While the teachers and students waited for the rains to stop to return home, there was no let-up in the downpour, resulting in flooding in the nearby stream and making the school appear like an island.
The teachers had a tough time keeping the children inside their classrooms.
The Belavatagi panchayat officials rushed to the spot to make arrangements for the safety of the children and supply food and water for them.
Sources said the officials were in touch with the teachers instructing them not to allow children to get into the water, whose level was rising dangerously

A BJP worker was detained on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing the son of the party's district president of Rajsamand in Rajasthan after he was stopped from attending a party meeting, police said.
The accused, identified as Kartik, was stopped from entering the venue of the BJP district executive committee meeting in Nathdwara town of Rajsamand district by Arvind Singh, the son of BJP district president Man Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chhagan Singh Rajpurohit said.
Kartik attacked Arvind Singh with a knife after the meeting got over. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment where his condition was stated to be critical, the police officer said.
He said that Kartik has been booked under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and taken into custody for interrogation.

The announcement of their nomination was made by Prime Minister Modi on Twitter. 
"The remarkable PT Usha Ji is an inspiration for every Indian. Her accomplishments in sports are widely known but equally commendable is her work to mentor budding athletes over the last several years. Congratulations to her on being nominated to the Rajya Sabha," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter.
He also shared his pictures with Usha and Ilaiyaraaja along with his congratulatory messages in separate tweets.
"The creative genius of @ilaiyaraaja Ji has enthralled people across generations. His works beautifully reflect many emotions. What is equally inspiring is his life journey- he rose from a humble background and achieved so much. Glad that he has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha," Modi said.

A political crisis, with a filmy twist? When the Shiv Sena rebellion was underway, did some NCP leaders try to secretly enter their hotel to get in touch the MLAs? Was it an attempt to repeat what had happened in 2019 - when some NCP MLAs had been "rescued" from a hotel in BJP-ruled Haryana?
In both cases, it was this NCP leader - Sonia Doohan - who was at the centre of the action. In the latest incident, two NCP leaders were arrested from a Goa resort on July 2. It was the Taj Resort in Convention Centre in Goa where the rebel Sena MLAs were staying. NCP's Sonia Doohan, and Shray Kothiyal had tried to check into the hotel, but were arrested after being accused of using fake IDs. The two politicians were granted bail on 3 July.
The rebel MLAs had been tipped-off that a woman at the resort was asking about them, according to news reports quoting sources. The incident was compared to another episode two and a half years ago, when some NCP MLAs sneaked out of a hotel during the short-lived alliance between Ajit Pawar and BJP's Devendra Fadnavis.

In November 2019, Sonia Doohan had claimed to have "rescued" 4 NCP MLAs. This transpired when Ajit Pawar had apparently rebelled against uncle Sharad Pawar and allied with the BJP to form the government after elections threw up a split verdict.
Five NCP legislators had been taken to BJP-ruled Haryana, and housed on the fifth floor of a hotel in Gurugram. Sonia Doohan claimed that she booked rooms on all floors of the hotel, except the fifth floor. NCP claimed that heavy security had been deployed at the hotel to keep the MLAs trapped.
Doohan said that in order to free the MLAs, she mapped a route inside the hotel which would not have CCTV cameras. Subsequently, one NCP MLA was taken out of the back gate which was linked to another hotel. When two more were being taken out, uproar broke out.
Doohan said that she had to leave her own car at the hotel, and take another vehicle to drive the 2 MLAs to Sharad Pawar's house in Delhi. Then, the fourth MLA was "rescued" at 2:30 at night.
So, who is Sonia Doohan, the protagonist in these escapades? She is the national president of the student wing of the Nationalist Congress Party.
She hails from Petwar village in Haryana's Hisar, and her family is engaged in farming. She studied at a village school, before graduating from Kurukshetra University. Doohan also trained to be a pilot in Pune, which is when she got involved in student politics.
After the latest incident, Doohan has claimed that police, Black Cat commandos, and political party workers detained her from the Goa resort at 5:30 am on July 2.
The NCP has come to Sonia Doohan's defence, claiming that their two leaders had gone to Goa as tourists, and not politicians. The party said that Goa's BJP government was keeping an eye on Doohan due to the 2019 episode, and the duo checked into the resort using Shray Kothiyal's ID. Also, Sonia Doohan used Shray's wife's ID, and not a fake document, NCP said.
The incident shows that although the Maharashtra political crisis dominated headlines for days, it was the tip of the iceberg as even more drama was playing out in the background.

Twitter India has taken down the tweet by Toronto-based documentary maker Leena Manimekalai in which she had shared the now controverstial poster of her film 'Kaali'. 
The poster showing Hindu deity Kali smoking and holding a pride flag led to protests and the director was accused of hurting religious sentiments. 
After the poster was 'withheld' by Twitter India, Manimekalai tweeted asking it the social media platform would also withhold tweets of hatemongers who kept sharing the poster that they find objectionable. 
The director had tweeted the poster on Saturday said the film was part of the 'Rhythms of Canada' segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
The Museum has now cancelled the screening of the short-film following protests by Hindu groups in Canada.
