Bhubaneswar, Aug 25 (PTI) Former BJP MLA Karendra Majhi has passed away at a Bhubaneswar hospital, where he was receiving treatment for kidney-related issues, according to his family.

Majhi, aged 52, was a respected tribal leader hailing from the Kandhamal district. He succumbed to his ailments on Sunday night at a private healthcare facility.

His political journey saw him getting elected to the Odisha Assembly from the Baliguda constituency in 2004 and again in 2009.

As a prominent figure from the Kutia Kondh tribe, Majhi marked history by becoming the first postgraduate from his community. He was also a scholar, having authored three books in the Kui language.

Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, expressed his sorrow, stating, "His loss is irreparable to us all. I extend my condolences to his bereaved family and pray to Lord Jagannath for the eternal peace of the departed soul." The BJP state president, Manmohan Samal, along with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, also visited the hospital to pay their respects to the departed leader.

On Monday morning, his mortal remains were brought to the Odisha Assembly, where lawmakers across party lines paid their tributes. Later, his body was moved to the BJP state office, where further respects were offered.
