Cash at residence: Govt likely to bring impeachment motion against Justice Varma

New Delhi, May 27 (PTI): The Indian government is contemplating bringing an impeachment motion in Parliament against Judge Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court, following accusations stemming from a Supreme Court-appointed probe. The inquiry, which revealed a large amount of burnt cash at Varma's official residence in Delhi, has put him under scrutiny. If Justice Varma, who was reassigned from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court after this incident, does not step down, impeachment appears to be the likely course of action during the Monsoon Session of Parliament in July. CJI Sanjiv Khanna had urged Varma's resignation following an in-house inquiry that indicted him, even though the inquiry's findings remain undisclosed. Despite this pressure, Varma has consistently denied any connections to the discovered cash. The government intends to engage with opposition parties before pursuing impeachment, which has attracted widespread political condemnation. "A final decision on the matter will be taken soon. It is difficult to ignore such a visible scandal," stated a source. An impeachment motion necessitates the backing of at least 50 Rajya Sabha members or 100 Lok Sabha members. Upon approval with a two-thirds majority, a designated probe committee is formed, which includes a Supreme Court judge, a high court chief justice, and an eminent jurist. The government seeks support from all political factions on the motion, which will include the committee's findings on the half-burnt cash found at Varma's former Delhi residence, before his transfer back to the Allahabad HC.
