Governor Highlights Jharkhand's Progress and Challenges on Independence Day

Ranchi, August 15 (PTI) – Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar emphasized that robust law and order are crucial for a state's progress during the Independence Day celebrations in Ranchi. On Friday, he highlighted Jharkhand's battle against challenges such as Naxalism and the illegal drug trade.

The governor, traditionally not seen presiding over the flag-hoisting in Ranchi, broke from custom by taking part in the Independence Day function.

“Stringent measures have been implemented against Naxalism,” Gangwar stated. He noted, "197 Naxalites were arrested, 17 killed, and 10 were compelled to surrender."

The governor praised the state government's initiative against the illegal drug trade, stating that thousands of acres of opium cultivation were eradicated, dealing a significant blow to the industry. He also highlighted welfare initiatives like waiving off farm loans amounting to Rs 2,300 crore to aid 5 lakh farmers.

On infrastructure development, Gangwar mentioned projects valued at Rs 13,000 crore aimed at constructing 3,800 km of highways across Jharkhand. “Infrastructure augmentation remains a priority,” he asserted.

Further, the World Bank has commended Jharkhand’s Maiya Samman Yojna, under which 51 lakh women receive monthly assistance of Rs 2,500. This initiative is a testament to the state's commitment to societal welfare, according to Gangwar.

In keeping with protocol, the chief minister customarily hoists the national flag at Morabadi in Ranchi, whereas the governor oversees the event in Dumka. However, in light of the passing of JMM founder Shibu Soren, his son and Chief Minister, Hemant Soren, remained in his ancestral village of Nemra to perform the 'shradh' rituals.
