Chaos in Jharkhand Assembly Over Probe Demands and Demonstrations

Ranchi: The Jharkhand assembly experienced chaotic scenes on Monday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Surya Hansda, allegedly killed by police during an encounter.

Members of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress staged a demonstration against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, as well as the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill. This bill aims to disqualify a prime minister, chief ministers, and ministers from holding office if they are imprisoned for 30 days or more.

As the session began, MLAs from both sides stormed the Well of the House, raising slogans.

Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato repeatedly urged the members to return to their seats, but his requests were ignored, leading to continued protests.

Amid the disruption, the speaker adjourned the House until 12:30 PM. "Members have important questions today. I feel sad to adjourn the House," he lamented.

Surya Hansda, who had contested several assembly elections, was arrested on August 10 from Nawadih village in Deoghar. The alleged encounter occurred while he was being taken to Rahadbadia Hills to recover hidden weapons.

According to police, Hansda attempted to escape custody by snatching a weapon and firing at them, prompting the police to retaliate, resulting in his death.
