New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI): Academician and art critic Janeita Singh, along with publisher Niyogi Books, has been honored with the third edition of the prestigious Oxford Bookstore Art Book Prize for their work titled "F.N. Souza: The Archetypal Artist".

The award, which saw five remarkable titles vying for the top honor, was presented at a ceremony held at the Embassy of Norway on Wednesday. The winners were bestowed with a trophy, certificate, and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Speaking on this accomplishment, Singh remarked, "To be loved is to be seen and known. The critical study on Souza's life and art was a dance with provocation, heresy, and beauty.” She basked in the recognition, noting how the book has found a distinguished spot on esteemed shelves and is appreciated both by readers and institutions alike. “Being crowned by the Oxford Bookstore Art Book Prize in the homeland is delightful," she added.

The selection process was guided by a distinguished jury chaired by Alka Pande, an eminent art critic. Joining her were May-Elin Stener, the Ambassador of Norway to India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives; Priti Paul, the director of Apeejay Surrendra Group; and Apurva Kackar, director of institutional affairs and outreach at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA).

Alka Pande emphasized, "As art increasingly becomes a collectible, the importance of thoughtfully documenting it through high-quality production cannot be overstated.” She highlighted the prize's significant role in motivating artists, galleries, cultural institutions, and publishers to produce more art books, which serve as vital records preserving and disseminating artistic and cultural ideas.

In addition to declaring the winner, the jury also praised two other notable publications from the shortlist: "Raza, the other modern" authored by Gayatri Sinha, Yashodhara Dalmia, and Geeti Sen, and published by Mapin Publishing and The Raza Foundation; and "A Thousand Shadows" by Navin Sakhuja, published by Progressive Art Gallery.
