Central Team Evaluates Flood Damage in Jammu Over 4 Days

Jammu, Sep 3 (PTI) — The Central government has dispatched an inter-ministerial team to conduct comprehensive on-ground inspections of flood-impacted districts in the Jammu region over the next four days to evaluate the actual extent of losses and damages due to recent rains.

This was announced during a high-level meeting led by Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, alongside the head of the inter-ministerial team and Joint Secretary of the National Disaster Management Authority of India, Col Kirti Pratap Singh, on Wednesday night.

The meeting focused on the repercussions of recent cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides in the Jammu region.

"Over the forthcoming four days, the inter-ministerial team will perform exhaustive on-ground assessments in the affected zones to ascertain the precise scale of damages and losses across the Jammu division's districts, subsequently presenting a detailed report to the Government of India," a government spokesperson stated.

The Central team includes representatives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Rural Development, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Ministry of Finance.

During the meeting, the attendees were presented with a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation outlining the scale of damages inflicted on private property, public infrastructure, and loss of lives, as reported by the spokesperson.

The Divisional Commissioner briefed Central team members on the affected areas and the extent of damage inflicted on crucial infrastructure, including roads, power supply, and water supply projects.

He also updated them on the ongoing efforts to preserve lives with support from security forces, emergency responders, the National Disaster Response Force, Union Territory Disaster Response Force, Police, Army, and Central Armed Police Forces.

Officials discussed the challenges posed by incessant rains, flash floods, and landslides, focusing on damaged roads, power infrastructure, and water supply while exploring restoration efforts, the spokesperson noted.

As the flood situation evolves in Kashmir, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review and sensitize the divisional and district administrations on readiness and response measures.

During the meeting, Dulloo reviewed the availability and operation of fundamental services, such as health, power, and telecom, across the Valley.

He emphasized ensuring an uninterrupted supply of vital commodities, including food grains, cooking gas, and fuel to the public.

Highlighting the significance of proactive measures, the chief secretary instructed all deputy commissioners to identify susceptible areas and initiate precautionary evacuation where necessary.

He stressed the necessity for the administration to maintain close contact with the public and provide timely assistance.
