Bilkis Bano has challenged the remission of sentence and subsequent release of 11 convicts in the gangrape and murder case.

The Supreme Court said on 22 March 2023 that it would constitute a special bench to hear the petition filed by Bilkis Bano, who was gangraped and whose family was murdered during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that he will look into constituting the bench later in the day.
Bilkis Bano has challenged the remission of sentence and subsequent release of 11 convicts in the gangrape and murder case. Besides the plea challenging the release of the convicts, the gang-rape survivor had also filed a separate petition seeking a review of the apex court's May 13, 2022 order on a plea by a convict.
Seven members of Bilkis Bano's family were also killed during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
In its May 13, 2022 order, the apex court had asked the state government to consider the plea of a convict for premature release in terms of its policy of July 9, 1992 which was applicable on the date of conviction and decide it within a period of two months.

All 11 convicts were granted remission by the Gujarat government and released on August 15, last year.
Bano's review plea against the May 13, 2022 order, however, was dismissed by the top court in December last year.

Doctors were performing a Caesarean section procedure at the Sub District Hospital, Bijbehara when the tremors hit. First equipment started shaking, and then a power cut plunged the room into darkness, with only slight illumination from the machines.
In a video shared by the Anantnag health department, the medical staff are heard praying while continuing the procedure. One is heard saying, "Keep the baby safe."
Eventually, the lights come back on, and a medic says, "You are fine."

Pronouncing a verdict in the case of violence at Jamia Millia Islamia university in 2019, a Delhi court discharged student activists Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha.
Additional Sessions Judge Arul Verma on 4 February 2023 discharged the two in the case related to violence at Jamia following protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. A detailed order in the matter was not immediately available.
However, Imam will continue to remain in jail as he is also an accused in the case related to an alleged conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.
Police had registered an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting, in connection with the communal violence that erupted after a clash between police and people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to 14-day judicial custody in a money laundering case arising out of the excise policy matter.
Special Judge M K Nagpal sent the senior AAP leader to jail till April 5 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) produced him on conclusion of his custodial interrogation in the matter.
The anti-money laundering probe agency has so far quizzed Sisodia for seven days in its custody in the matter.
On Tuesday, the special court deferred the hearing to March 25 on the bail plea of Sisodia in the main case being probed by the CBI.
The CBI on February 26 arrested Sisodia in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.
The ED arrested Sisodia on March 9 in Tihar jail, where he was lodged in connection with the case being probed by the CBI.

India has recorded 1,134 new coronavirus cases, while the active cases increased to 7,026, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The death toll climbed to 5,30,813 with five deaths. One death each has been reported by Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra while one fatality was reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The daily positivity was recorded at 1.09 per cent while the weekly positivity was pegged at 0.98 per cent.

Eleven people were injured when a ride collapsed at a fair in Rajasthan's Ajmer district on Tuesday, officials said.
The victims were riding a carousel when it suddenly plummeted while on its downward journey.
In a video of the incident, people could be heard screaming as the carousel crashed.
A woman could also be heard saying "This is dangerous" in the video while the ride was on its way down. It crashed moments later.
A police official said the incident occurred due to a break in a cable.
