Jahangirpuri riots: bulldozer halted for 2 weeks, SC stays demolition

The Supreme Court has stayed the demolition drive in Delhi's Jahangirpuri for 2 more weeks. The North Delhi civic officials had begun razing structures in the area on Wednesday morning but it was stopped after orders from the Supreme Court.

The top court however expressed it displeasure that the demolition activity had continued for over one and a half hours after it had passed the orders. It said it will take serious view of the demolitions carried out after information was given to Mayor.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has also been asked to file a reply to the plea against what it calls an 'anti-encroachment' drive.

The Supreme Court also issued notice to union govt and the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat on another petition filed against the authorities in different states resorting to demolition of houses of people who are accused of crimes

Bulldozers tore down several concrete and temporary structures close to a mosque in Jahangirpuri on Wednesday as part of an anti-encroachment drive by the BJP-ruled civic body, days after the northwest Delhi neighbourhood was rocked by communal violence.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday intervened twice to stop the drive after it took cognizance of the petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind against the demolition
