Five Deaths Prompt Investigation at Odisha's SLNMCH

Koraput, June 4 (PTI): An investigation has been initiated following the deaths of five patients, attributed to alleged negligence, at the state-operated Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, Odisha, officials reported on Wednesday.

Among the deceased were two men and three women who passed away on Tuesday night in a short succession. Their families have claimed that injections administered to them led to the fatalities.

The superintendent of SLNMCH, Susanta Kumar Sahu, indicated that a departmental inquiry is underway. "We have organized a meeting involving all departmental heads. While it appears that the patients who died on Tuesday night were critically ill upon admission, preliminary findings suggest that their deaths may not have been caused by incorrect injections. Nevertheless, we will thoroughly investigate the allegations," Sahu stated.

Three of the patients were in the ICU at the time of their passing, while the other two died in the general ward.

Subsequent to the tragic events, the families of the deceased staged a demonstration outside the hospital, necessitating police deployment.

Authorities have confirmed that the bodies will be released to the families following autopsy examinations.
