Indore is India's cleanest city for 5th time in a row; Surat comes 2nd, Vijaywada 3rd

For the fifth time in a row, Indore has bagged the award for being India’s cleanest city. The results of the cleanliness survey, an annual exercise conducted by the Urban Affairs Ministry, were announced on Saturday.

President Ram Nath Kovind presented the ‘Swachh Survekshan 2021’ awards to the winners in a ceremony in New Delhi.

Employees of Indore Municipal Corporation were seen celebrating with music and dancing after the President's announcement.

Taking to Twitter, Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri congratulated Indore and its “people, political leadership and municipal corporation,” among others.

Surat in Gujarat, which grabbed the second spot in the cleanest cities’ list last year, has retained its position this year as well. Meanwhile, Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh has bagged the third position on the list.

Chhattisgarh has been adjudged the cleanest state in the annual cleanliness survey while Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh has won the cleanest Ganga town in the Swachh Survekshan 2021’ awards.
