IndiGo flights close to colliding in mid-air, mishap averted; probe underway

Two IndiGo planes, taking off for different cities from the Bengaluru airport, almost collided during departure. A major air mishap was averted at the last minute. But the incident was not reported to the authorities or recorded in a log book. This is what the DGCA, or Directorate General of Civil Aviation has reportedly stated in a preliminary report.

On January 9, two IndiGo flights were headed to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar from Bengaluru, as per reports. They had a total of 426 passengers and crew members on board. The DGCA reportedly found that after take-off, both planes were moving towards each other, but a mid-air collision was avoided after an approach radar controller gave a diverging heading.

The two planes were involved in a 'breach of separation', which means that the mandatory mid-air distance between the two planes was not maintained.

An investigation is underway and strict action will be taken against those responsible, DGCA officials were quoted as saying.
