Indian Railways Partners with SBI for Enhanced Employee Insurance

New Delhi, Sep 2 (PTI): In a significant move aimed at enhancing employee welfare, the Indian Railways has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of India (SBI), as announced in an official statement. The agreement promises increased insurance coverage for railway employees and their families.

The MoU was signed on Monday in the presence of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. According to this agreement, railway employees who have their salary accounts with SBI will be eligible for an accidental death insurance cover of Rs 1 crore, which is a substantial increase from the existing coverage. Currently, under the Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS), the coverage amounts are Rs 1.20 lakh, Rs 60,000, and Rs 30,000 for Group A, B, and C employees, respectively.

The press note highlighted further benefits, stating that all railway employees with salary accounts at SBI will now receive a natural death insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh. Notably, this benefit does not require any premium payment or medical examinations.

With approximately 7 lakh railway employees utilizing SBI for their salary accounts, this MoU is described as a major milestone in fostering a caring and beneficial partnership between Indian Railways and the bank, reflecting a commitment to employee welfare.

The ministry further outlined additional complementary insurance covers under the agreement. These include an air accident insurance (death) cover of Rs 1.60 crore, with an extra benefit of up to Rs 1 crore linked to RuPay debit cards. A personal accident (permanent total disablement) cover of Rs 1 crore, and a personal accident (permanent partial disability) cover of up to Rs 80 lakh, are also part of the package.
