Indian Army Honors Brigadier Mohd Usman on Death Anniversary

New Delhi, Jul 3 (PTI) — On Thursday, the Indian Army paid homage to Brigadier Mohd Usman, a revered figure in military history, on the occasion of his death anniversary. Known as the 'Lion of Naushera' or 'Naushera Ka Sher', the brave officer displayed extraordinary courage and leadership during the 1947-48 India-Pakistan war. His actions in the battle of Naushera, Jammu and Kashmir, were pivotal in ensuring a strategic victory for the Indian forces.

A solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place at Brigadier Usman's grave, situated in a cemetery near Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia. This event was held to honor his sacrifice and commemorate his heroism.

The gallant officer was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra, one of India's top military honors, for his service to the nation. Attendees included Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, the Director General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement of the Indian Army, and the colonel of the Parachute Regiment, both of whom laid wreaths. A wreath was also laid on behalf of the Chief of the Army Staff, with several serving and retired army officers present to pay their respects.

The Indian Army took to social media platform X to commemorate Brigadier Usman, using hashtag '#NausheraKaSher' to honor this embodiment of valor. They shared an image of an archival document dated March 16, 1948, which contained an order issued by Brigadier Usman during his command of the 50 (I) Para Brigade. His leadership was instrumental in the recapture of Jhangar and Naushera during the war. Tragically, he made the ultimate sacrifice on July 3, 1948.

Brigadier Usman's state funeral was notable for its attendance by high-profile figures, including then-Governor General Lord Mountbatten, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Union Minister Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, and Sheikh Abdullah. The officer's legacy of personal courage, exceptional leadership, and dedication to duty was celebrated by the Indian Army as a shining example within its highest traditions.

In another post on X, the Army shared images from the wreath-laying ceremony, noting the participation of Brigadier Usman's great-grand-niece Sana Ferozuddin and the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University. The Army reiterated their deepest respect and remembrance for the 'Hero of Naushera', highlighting the attendance of Colonel of the Parachute Regiment Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, along with both serving and veteran personnel.
