Indian airlines receive ultimatum to stop baggage delays

Long waits for claiming your luggage at Indian airports may soon be a thing of the past. Observing mainstream commercial airlines in the country, the civil aviation authorities said passengers should receive their luggage within 10-30 minutes of engine shutdown.

Major commercial airlines like Air India, Vistara and IndiGo were asked to implement the directive by February 26.

The decision was made after India’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security took note of at least 3600 commercial flights belonging to seven airlines. The monitoring exercise was carried out at six major airports in the country.

“During the year 2022, scheduled domestic airlines operated a total number of 9.43 lakh scheduled flights carrying a total of 123.2 million scheduled passengers as against 7.31 lakh scheduled flights carrying total of 82.74 million scheduled passengers during the
previous year 2021,” an annual report from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation has warned that airlines which fail to comply with the new rule by the deadline will face “further regulatory action.”
