India's rank falls in Human Development Index; see Pakistan, China, Sri Lanka's ranks

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, India's rank in the Human Development Index has fallen from 131 out of 189 countries in 2020, to 132 out of 191 countries in 2021.

India's HDI value fell from 0.645 in 2019, to 0.633 in 2021. The report released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said that like global trends, India's drop in HDI can be attributed to falling life expectancy - from 69.7 to 67.2 years.

Human Development is a measure of a nation's health, education, and average income. It is calculated using four indicators – life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, and the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.

However, some of India's neighbours like Bangladesh and Bhutan bucked the trend and registered an improvement. Sri Lanka (73), China (79), Bangladesh (129), and Bhutan (127) ranked above India, while Pakistan (161), Nepal (143), and Myanmar (149) ranked below.
