India Unveils Khelo Bharat Niti: A New Era in Sports Policy

India has launched the Khelo Bharat Niti to promote global sports prominence and socioeconomic growth through sports. The government is also focusing on innovation with a significant RDI scheme and job creation through the ELI program, fostering youth engagement.

India Unveils Khelo Bharat Niti: A New Era in Sports Policy

New Delhi, Jul 1 (PTI) It is a landmark day for India's pursuit of nurturing sporting talent and becoming a global sports hub, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked on Tuesday after his government approved the 'Khelo Bharat Niti,' a new national sports policy.

In a post on X, he outlined that the policy is based on five key pillars: achieving excellence on the global stage, utilizing sports for economic development, promoting sports for social development, making sports a people's movement, and integrating sports with education through the National Education Policy.

"May Indian sporting talent always flourish," he expressed.

The Prime Minister also commented on other pivotal decisions made by the Union Cabinet, stating that the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme will be transformative in the realm of research and innovation.

He articulated, "This scheme, with a funding pool of Rs. 1 lakh crore, will significantly impact emerging and sunrise sectors. It will also enhance private sector engagement in research and development."

In a separate post, he mentioned that the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme, sanctioned by the Cabinet, will spur job creation. The emphasis on manufacturing and incentives for first-time employees will greatly benefit the youth, he added.

The approval to construct the four-lane Paramakudi - Ramanathapuram highway section, deemed "great news" for Tamil Nadu's progress, will alleviate traffic congestion, boost economic growth, and enhance tourism, he noted.

Describing it as a "strategic roadmap" for India's ascent into the top five global sports nations, the Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed the Khelo Bharat Niti to establish "world-class systems" for coaching and athlete support, alongside a strong administrative framework to make India a formidable contender in the 2036 Olympics.

Initially introduced as the National Sports Policy in 1984, the new Khelo Bharat Niti 2025 will replace the 2001 policy. It serves as a "guiding document" to devise strategies and programs for improving the country's sporting ecosystem.

The Cabinet also sanctioned an Employment Linked Incentive scheme with a budget of Rs 1.07 lakh crore, aiming to generate 3.5 crore jobs over the next two years through EPFO's social security schemes.
